General Notes (Husband)
In the summer of 1993 Ray and Virginia took Eldon and Ida Vosburgh andwent to visit James and Gladys. We took them to lunch and visited them in their apartment in Battle Creek. James was a very slim, young, active 88 yearsold. He still played golf three times a week. He gave me the pictures of my grandfather Platt, my great grandparents, Frank and Nettie, and my greatgreat grandparents, James and Amanda Vosburgh, all of which Hattie, his mother, had kept. He lived with Amanda as a child together with his parents, Grant andHattie in the house which James built when he came to Michigan in the 1850's. Ifound a map in the library showing where the house was located and we later went looking for it, but only the barn remained. James was a graduate of Union City High School and attended KalamazooNormal Teacher's College. He was employed by Michigan Carton CompanyasTraffic Manager in Material Handling and Warehousing, retiring in 1971after 43 years.

General Notes (Husband)
The progenitor of E. T. Harbour came from the Britis h I s l e s to Virginiain the early part of the eighteent h cen tu r y . Thomas Harbour was born inWales . The year o f hi s bi r t h is in dispute but it is likely that it was somew here a ro un d 1695. The small country of Wales had b een p opulate d a ndt he land developed for centuries befor e th e birth o f Tho mas . Unless a mancame from a wealth y famil y or was t he eld es t son, he stood little chance of obtai ning any la nd. T o th e people of the time land w as equate d withwealt h and s ecuri ty as most of the econo my centere d on agricul ture. In Wale s there was very litt le availabl e land and w ithout i t on e was forcedeither t o work in th e fields a s a labore r or t o pick up some ty pe oftrade a s a skille d worker.
These options must not have been pleasing career c h o i c es to youngThomas Harbour. If so, he would have st a y e d i n Wales. Instead Thomasopted for an opportunit y th a t h ad b een open to ambitious, adventurousrisk take rs f o r onl y a sh ort time. The frontier land of the Ne w Worl dw as a c hance t o escape the limitations of lif e in Wale s . At som e pointa s a young man, Thomas decide d to seek h i s fortune s in Ameri ca.
Nothing is known of Thomas Harbour from preserve d r e c o rds before theyear 1728. Judging from facts glea me d fr o m l ater years, Thomas seemed tohold some excelle n t qual it ies . He acquired a large amount of land, all o n the fron tie r, d uring his lifetime. In the hardship s o f this fron tier Thoma s raised a large family and live d t o be an old m an. T heseac hievements must reflect th e inte lligence, disc ipline , deter mination, and health o f Thoma s that made thi s possi ble. Th e first trace of T homasi n America is the t raditio n of his m arriage to Sar ah Wit t in CharlesCity Cou nty, Vir ginia. Th e Witts an d Harbour s had a very closerel ationshi p in thos e earl y days of Vi rginia. Wherever deed s for onef amily ar e fo und, the oth er family is found nea rby. The Wi tts wereF r ench Huguenot s that were driven ou t of Europe f or religi o us reasons.T he British Crown and t he colony of V irgini a gav e them th e privileges ofBritis h citizenry and i mme diately t he Wit ts began to become lar gelandowners. T h e first Witts i n A merica were John Witt a nd his two so ns,J ohn and Willia m . John Witt first appear ed in the l atter p art of the17t h ce ntury in Virginia. Hi s name app eared seve ral times i n a se ries ofland patents.
Tradition also is that Thomas Harbour married Sara h W i t t i n Charles CityCounty. If this is true, Thomas f ollo w e d hi s wife's family to their homein Henrico Count y.
The first existing document of Thomas Harbour da t e s f r om 28September, 1728. He paid 40 shillings fo r a l an d gr an t of 400 acres ofnew land on the lower for ks o f Dee p Cr eek . Deep Creek is in HenricoCounty on t he no rth si de o f th e James River less than a mile from Tuckah oe Cree k. Wh en Go ochland County was formed from H enric o in 1728T uckah oe Cre ek formed the eastern most bo undary , encompass ing th e Wittl ands in the new county. T hree No tched Road , an ol d track fo llowing thewatershe d betwee n the James a nd Sout h Anna River s and named fo r along-go ne peculiar t ree mar k along the ro ute, conne cted the sh ortdistance bet ween Tho mas Harbour an d hi s father-in-la w.
It was in Goochland County that the second rec o r d o f T homas isfound. Thomas was involved in a cour t ca s e the re i n 1729/30 in which he,as a plaintiff, ha d a ca s e dism issed . It was around this time that thec ouple b eg an to ha ve chi ldren. Four sons were likely bo rn here , Da vid,Talmo n, Abne r, and Elisha. Lavina and Ma ry, tw o daug hters, wo uld also have been born in this p eriod.
The movement of the Harbour and Witt families wa s t y p i cal among theearly Virginians. Jamestown had onl y be e n s et tled 100 years earlier. Thelack of roads mad e i t ne cess ar y for people to live on navigable waters. Few h ome s wer e wit hout private wharfs. As the populati on gre w, t hepeop le beg in to move west along the James R iver an d th e loca l creeksa round it. It appears from sur viving r ecord s tha t the Witt s and Harboursbegan to amas s propert y as t hey sl owly contin ued to move westward.
The land in western Goochland County during th e 1 7 3 0 s was virginwilderness. Though not many Indians l iv e d i n th e area, few white men had seen thearea befor e 17 30 . La nd gr ants were first available there in 1727. 2 1 O n 1 Augu st1734 , Thomas was granted 400 acres on bo t h side s of Ball enger' s Creek in Goochland County, Virg in ia. I t is unclea r if Thom as kept his land on Deep Cre e k when h e received t henew parc el of land. Thomas was r ec orded i n Goochland a s witnessin g a deed forCharles Co x o n 17 Nov ember 1735. T hree years l ater Thomas receive d 1, 463 mor e acres inthe fo rm of a lan d grant adjoinin g hi s 400 acr e farm.24 By thi s time Thoma s musthave es tabli shed himse lf as a man of mea ns. A 1704 Vi rginia la w limi ted landpat ents to 500 acres . Exceptions wer e mad e onl y to those wh o could employ th e land withat lea s t five s ervants or sla ves, which apparen tly Thomas mus t hav e had.
It is possible that Thomas was moving closer t o h i s W i tt relativeswhen he received the Ballenger's Cr ee k gr ant . W illiam Witt was known to have lived therea s we ll . I n a dee d dated 10 August 1741, William left t o hi s so n Joh n 200 ac res boundedby the James and Rivann a Riv ers , and Ba llenger' s Creek. He stated that this la ndwa s hi s place o f residence . A deed from 1737 lends w eigh t to t he possibi litythat Wil liam lived there near T homas . On 2 8 May 1737 J ohn Graves o f Goochland Countyso ld 40 0 acre s known as "Gra ves Indian Fi eld" on both sid es o f Balleng er's Creek. The d eed stated tha t the land w as ne xt to Thom as Harbour's an d was witnessed b yWillia m Witt.
On 18 July 1739, Thomas was appointed as a surv e y o r i n GoochlandCounty. He worked along a road that l e d u p t o th e ridge of Mechunk Creek. Fouryears later , o n 18 O ctob er 17 43, he did some more surveying alon g th e road fr omBal lenger 's Creek to Mountain Road. Thi s wa s the "Thre e Notch ed Roa d" in the vicinity of hiswi fe' s family, th e Witts.
Around this time frame the last of Thomas and Sa r a h ' s children wereborn. Elijah and Adonijah are two kn o w n so n s and two daughters, Jane and Sarah, may be incl ud e d her e a s well. Around 1742, Sarah's father, John Wi t t Jr ., die d.
Any details of the personal and daily life of Th o m a s a nd Sarah havebeen lost over the generations. Wha t t he i r pol itical and religious beliefs were areunknown . I t i s e viden t that religion played an important par t in t hei r lif e as m any ofthe children were given bibli cal nam es . Sarah , as th e daughter of Huguenots, had aPr otestan t le aning an d probab ly associated with those o f simila r belie fs. The f amilywa s most likely Baptist. I n 1760 th eir so n Talmon wa s a chart er member of the Dan River Bapt ist Chu rch. Regardl ess of th e affiliation, ho wever, reli gion wa s important to the family.
Thomas on 20 September 1745 received another lan d g r a n t in GoochlandCounty. A 400 acre tract was obtain e d o n t h e north branch of Horsley's Creek.Thomas must h av e mo ve d hi s family there for that same month he sol d 1,0 00 o f hi sacre s around Ballenger's Creek to John Bi sby an d h e may h ave ne eded a new home. Houses, fences , and orc hard s were e stablis hed here as fifteen years l ater it wa ssol d as devel oped pro perty.
As they grew older, Thomas's children were proba b l y v e ry importantin helping him run his vast land hold in gs . O n 2 8 September 1753, Thomas acquiredeight separa t e gra nt s fo r land in Southern Virginia, and they wer e mo st lik ely obtai ned for his children. 354 acres wer e acqui red o n Fal l Cree k and the Mayo Riverjunction i n Halifa x County . Acc ordin g to Williams, this was th e land tha t Thomasch ose fo r his o wn farm. The land bord ered Rockin gham County , Nort h Carolin a along the southe rn propert y line.
That day he also obtained two tracts on Irwin's Ri v e r 3 5 inLunenburg County, one of 130 and another of 15 0 a cr e s , two tracts of 204 and 144 acres onSycamore Cr eek , Ha li fa x County, 115 and 318 acres on Goblintown C reek , an d o n e 140 acretract on both sides of Blackberr y Cre ek, i n Hal if ax County. This land totaled1, 555 ac res. T homas p robabl y h ad spent some time down in old Ha lifax C ounty, w here th elan d was located, save that par t on near by Irwin' s River , an d handpicked thechoice are as of lan d as the tr acts wer e no t all together. The sur vey date s on the landd ated bac k to 1 749 so perhaps Thom as left S arah and his yo unger chi ldren a t home while he looked fo r land in Souther n Virginia . The ru les for lan d grants r equired thatsomeon e settle o n each tra ct fo r cultivation , so it is possibl e that eac h son and dau g hter, along wit h himself, settle d one.
This would be the last big move for Thomas Harb o u r . H e was nearingthe end of middle age. In October 17 6 0 , Th oma s sold the land that he had receivedyears befo r e o n Hor sley 's Creek up in Albermarle County. With al l h is f amil y dow n south,Thomas no longer had any need f or i t. I t wa s sol d for 25 pounds. After raisinga larg e fami ly h e settl ed dow n in the beautiful hills of th e Blue Ri dge M ountains , surro unded by children and gran dchildren.
Of the large family that surrounded Thomas, onl y a p a r t ial picturecan be formed from the remaining rec ords . O n e d aughter, Lavina, is believed by some tohav e marr ied h e r cou sin Charles Witt around 1746 and to ha ve live d nea r h erpare nts in Halifax County. This is que stionabl e bu t a Ch arles W itt did own land thatbordere d Thomas' s farm.
There is strong evidence to believe that Mary , w i f e o f PalatiahShelton, was the daughter of Thomas a nd S ar a h Har bour. Shelton was their close neighbor.I n a 176 7 ti th e in P ittsylvania County, Palatiah was lis ted a s a neig hbo r. Hebe came owner of three tracts of Th omas' s land. O n 1 8 Septembe r 1766 Thomas sold 144 acres on Syc amore Cree k t o Palatiah S helton. Shelton sold th is lan d 4 yearslat er , on 29 Novembe r 1770, to Richard W hite fo r 50 pounds . Th e land was descr ibed asbeing a so uth bran ch of Smith' s Riv er, on the sout h side of Sycam ore Creek , crossin g a branc h of the Sycamore , and cross ing two br anches. Sh elton's wi fe Maryrelinquishe d her r ight of dow er. If Thom as gave She lton this land a s a gi ft to hisson -in-law an d daughter, i t would have bee n ne cessary for M ary to do t his.
On 25 August 1768 Shelton bought two tracts from T h o m a s. For 100pounds Shelton received the 130 acre tra c t o n I rw in's River, being on both sidesand starting a t t he m out h o f Peeping Creek. Witnessing the deed was T homa s's t w o sons ,Abner and Adonijah, and Adonijah's bro ther- in-la w , Sam Dal ton Jr. Again, fouryears later, She lton s old i t . He receive d 70 pounds from Sam Crowly, th e lan d wasrec or ded as bein g on Smith's River, a place k nown b y the nam e o f Rock Castl e, upPeeping Creek, dow n Smith' s River, f orme rly Irwin's . This deed wasrecorde d the sam e day tha t he s old the prev ious tract, 29 Nov ember 1770 .Again hi s wife Ma ry relinquish ed her right o f dower. Sh elton too k a 30poun d loss on th e land if h e actually pai d 100 poun ds for it.
Shelton on the same day that he received the 1 3 0 a c r e tract onIrwin's River, sold 200 acres on bot h si de s o f F alling Creek, on theMayo River, and on th e divid in g lin e b etween David Witt and Shelton, toAdon ijah Har bou r fo r 100 p ounds. This land was surveyed i n a 400 a crep arce l for Dav id Witt and Shelton in 1765 , and late r grant ed t o them in1 767. The price, 100 pou nds, is sig nifican t as i t is identic al to whatShelto n paid Thoma s for th e 144 acr e lot that sa me day. It w as mostlikel y an even s wap. Whe n Adonijah sol d this lan d later, he d escribed it as the la nd his father "g ave" D avid Witt an d Shelton. Wha t became o fMary and Palati a h Shelton afte r 1770 is not cl ear, but ev idence doessu ppor t the belie f that Mary wa s a daughter o f Thomas.
Abner married Joyce Thornhill around 1750. Abne r l i v e d near Irwin'sRiver on Sycamore Creek. Thomas de ede d h i m t he 204 acre tract there on17 August 1763. Ab ne r witn es se d several deeds for his brothers andfathe r an d it app ear s t hat he was the only one to leave hi s mar k vice asi gnat ure . Sycamore Creek lies in what i s now Pa trick Count y. A bner 'sRidge in Patrick is near h is old fa rm. Part o f the B lue R idge Mountains,it is sai d to be na med after h im. Abn er die d in 1778, leaving h is landt o his four son s, and ot her ite ms to all his un named chi ldren. His widow Joyce rema ined i n Virginia.
Elisha Harbour married a woman named Margaret ar o u n d 1 760. On 17August 1763 Elisha was given a 150 ac r e tr ac t o n Irwin's River by hisfather. He appeare d o n Edwar d B ooke r's tax list of 1765 near Abner. On a 17 J uly 176 7 ta x list , Elisha paid 1 tithe for 150 a cres, n ext to h imwa s his br other Elijah. This was th e land tha t his fat her g ave hi m 4years earlier. On 22 S eptember 17 69, Elish a sol d the Irw in's River tractof 15 0 acres to T homas Hend erso n for 35 pou nds, beginning a t CharlesWitt' s land. T he la st record o f Elisha date s 22 May 1773, w hen hebough t 243 a cres from J ohn Witt o n Marrowbone Cre ek.
Elijah was one of the younger sons of Thomas and S a r a h . He marriedPrudence Pusey around 1758. They liv e d o n t h e 318 acre Goblintown Creektract that his fath e r dee de d hi m in October 1761 for a mere 10 shillings H e was liv in g ther e on 17 July 1767 when Peter Copela n d recorded h imt here o n his tax list. Elijah had 310 ac re s and "a negr o na med Han nah",he paid two tithes. Eli ja h died fairly y oun g in 1769 . The appraisal ofhis esta t e included a stoc k o f hogs, sund rey cattle, 3 horses , an d aparcel of book s, a ll totaling p ounds.
Not much is known about Jane, the daughter of Sa r a h a n d Thomas. Hersister Sarah deeded her half of he r p er son a l belongings after her death.Sarah referred t o he r a s Ja n e Witt of Patrick County. Some researchers belie ve, t hrou g h the process of elimination, that Jan e was th e wif e ofE li jah Witt, but no direct evidence ex ists fo r this.
Sarah married David Witt and lived near her pare n t s . D avid was a sonof William Witt, making him a cous i n . Da vid , like Palatiah Shelton, received a land gran t o f 2 00 a cre s near Thomas, apparently with hishelp, i n 17 67 . Davi d an d Sarah's two sons, John and William Wi tt , wer edeede d th e 140 acre Blackberry Creek tract by t hei r Gran dfathe r Thom as.The Witts also came into some l an d on Gobl intow n Creek a s David sold a313 acre trac t o n the sout h fork t o David Ha rbour, a son of Elisha , foro nly 40 pou nds on 2 8 May 1772 . Both Sarah and Dav id appe ared to hav elived i n Souther n Virginia for the r est o f their lives . As the y lived inth e part of Virgini a tha t eventually be came Patr ick County, t hey recordedt heir w ills there, Davi d in 1808 , and Sarah, t hroug h a serie s of deeds,in May o f 1809. Sh e died in 1814 . I n 1815, th eir son John Witt s old twotrac ts on Blackber r y Creek, i ncluding the one hi s grandfathe r Thomasgav e him 5 3 year s earlier. Soon afte r this he move d to Ten nessee.
Adonijah Harbour appears to have been the young e s t s o n of Thomas andSarah. In 1767 Adonijah was list e d i n a t it hable entry with his father. In 1768 Thomas a n d Pa latia h Sh elton became involved in some land tradi ng that r esulte d i n a deed of 200 acres on Falls Cree k i n Adonija h's nam e. A year later, on 25 August 1769, h e ma rried a ne ighbor , An n Dalton, inPittsylvania County . On ly a few ye ars lat er Ad onijah later moved acrosst he bor der to Nort h Carolin a. Aft er a short stay, he mov ed hi s family toEas t Baton Ro uge, Lo uisiana, where he d ied ar ound 1815.
As noted earlier, it appears that Thomas passe d t h e d e eds hereceived in 1753 on to his family. Onl y on e tr ac t wa s not directlypassed to a known relation . On 1 7 Aug us t 176 3 George Vourtman was deededthe 11 5 acre Go blinto w n Creek t ract, for only 40 pounds. Vour tman doesn ot appe a r in late r tax lists and his identit y is unknown.
After Thomas completed the last of these transac t i o n s he was wellwithin old age. Still surrounded by f am i l y an d friends, including manygrandchildren, Thoma s pr ob ab ly en joyed the twilight of his life. It isno t clea r whe n e xactl y this long and busy life ended. I n 1767 h e wasl iste d i n a tithable entry with his son Ad onijah.6 7 He wa s rec orde d aspaying 4 tithes on 790 acr es that h e owned . He la ter p aid tax on 1,302and 1,39 2 acres i n Halifa x County . A seri es of three deeds wer e made inA ugust o f 1777, do cumentin g the sell of thre e tracts an d using t he nameThoma s and Sar ah Harbour. I n two of thes e deeds, T homas and Sa rah soldPh ilip Angli n 304 and Joh n Journica n 50 acres o n Falls Cree k and t heMayo River . Put togethe r, this mayb e the 354 acr e tr act that Thom asreceived bac k in 1753. I t was passed th r ough the famil y that Thoma s haddied in 17 68, but if h e wa s alive in 1 777, he had n ot long to live . Froma wor k orde r dating ar ound 1779, Sar ah is listed wi thout Tho mas.Someti me afte r this date, Sar ah passed on a s well.
After the death of Thomas and Sarah, the famil y t h a t t hey leftbehind continued to prosper. It seem s tha t m os t o f this generationremained in the Virgini a area . Th e fa mil y house probably went to AbnerHarbou r as hi s olde st son , Da vid, later obtained the land I t remaine d inth e famil y unti l David's death when it wa s sold in 1 849 a s part o f theesta te in what had becom e Patrick Coun ty. Th e grandch ildren how ever, began to sp read out toward s Tenne ssee and N orth Caroli na. Only on e son,Adonijah , left th e region.
Thomas Harbour left a legacy that was to last ma n y g e n erations inhis family. The restless spirit tha t dr ov e h i m out of Wales was keptalive in his offspring . Th e H arbo ur s were never content to remain in anyon e plac e tha t ha d bee n settled for long. They did not s pend en ergy o nth e politi cs in towns, but rather moved t heir lar ge fami lie s to the o uterfringes of the ever exp anding fr ontier . Fro m Georgia t o Alabama, toMississippi , Arkansa s and Te xas, t he drive o f Thomas Harbour live d on.
General Notes (Wife)
Sarah Witt may have been born in France, but I fi n d t h a t unlikely and probably based on her French Hugue no t an c es try. Her marriage date is variable with many p eop le se tt lin g for 1705. I find that unlikely based o n he r age . He r ma rriage date is therefore careful conj ectur e.
