By Letters Patent dated 27th June 1627

The Right Hon Sir Thomas Roper Knight a member of the Irish privy council, a very valiant commander in the said realm of Ireland in the reign of Queen Elizabeth of most famous memory, married Anne daughter of Sir Thomas Harrington. The Sir Thomas had an assignment of the dissolved monastery & lordship of Baltinglass and other lands confirmed to him by Royal Patent of Charles 1st  10th Nov 1626 in regard of the many acceptable services done unto our father [presumably James 1st - MJR] and the late Queen Elizabeth & having performed so many worthy services in the last war & gained an extraordinary reputation in the eminent employments of command & government. (King’s letter dated at Westminster 18th May  3rd of Charles 1st) He was by letters patent dated June 22nd that year 1627 created a Baronet of Ireland raised to the Irish Peerage as Baron of Bantry Co. Cork & Viscount Baltinglass Co. Wicklow with the remainder to heirs male of his body. By a King’s letter of 20th Feb 1629 the Viscount had a respite of £2000-00 arrears due upon his farm of the licensing of ale houses [i.e. tax farming - MJR] & £1000-00 received from the clergy and a pension of 6 shillings a day assigned to one of his sons as well as his pay as a captain of a company of 50 to be secured to him. The Viscount died Feb 15th 1637 & was buried in St Johns church, Dublin.
