Robert was born 13 Nov 1826 in Gainesville, Georgia. H e married Martha Virginia TOWELL May 5, 1855 in Covington , Tipton Co., Tennessee. Dr. Robert Henry Harrison first at tended schools at Clarksville, Tennessee and the John Tyle r High School, in KY but near Clarksville, and bore off th e honors of his class at the age of seventeen. He at once b egan the study of medicine under his father, Dr. Jesse Harr ison, at his hospital in Nashville. Robert entered the Phys io Medical College of Cincinnati of Ohio, graduated and ent ered the Medical Department of the University of Alabama a t Mobile and graduated. He then finished the medical cours e at the Medical College in Cincinnati at the age of twenty . He began the active practice of medicine with his fathe r Dr. Jesse Harrison at Troy and Clarksville from 1846 to 1 850, then went to Memphis, where, in addition to his practi ce, he became Professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutica . After three years he went to Holly Springs, Mississippi a nd after a time bought property in Shelby Co., Tennessee, r etired from practice, opened a mill and engaged in the merc antile business.
From Louise Carter Harper, Union City, Tennessee: "Afte r Jesse Harrison Sr. died his wife, his children and his si ster went to live with Robert Henry Harrison II near Coving ton, Tenn. He had a country store and the community was kno wn as Harrison's Store."
At the outset of the Civil War Robt. H. Harrison starte d a heavy artillery unit at Ft. Pillow, Tennessee which h e commanded, and which immediately after the battle of Shil oh was attached to the Ninth Tennessee Infantry, and becam e the color bearing company or Company E. He was Captain o f his company and at the battle of Perryville, his compan y went in forty men strong and in fifteen minutes only fift een men were left, and of his regiment Dr. Harrison was th e ranking officer, all others having been killed. He was re commended for promotion and was in the battle of Murfreesbo ro, and was then ordered by Gen. J. E. Johnston to report t o Gen. Pemberton at Vicksburg, and took command of a compan y of conscripts which he was to recruit. He was taken priso ner in Shelby Co. while he was on this duty, and was firs t taken to Columbus, Kentucky, thence to Alton, Illinois an d finally to Johnson's Island, Ohio. His niece, Mary Towel l Carothers, told this story about her Grandfather and Robe rt Henry Harrison and the Civil War.
General Notes for Child Martha Virginia Harrison
Martha Virginia (Doll) HARRISON Martha was born Oct. 9, 1857. She married Edward Julius SAN DMEYER December 20, 1881. After his death in 1895, Martha m arried Walter H. HINSON. She moved to Richmond in 1902 an d was a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church. Mrs. Hinso n was for 25 years secretary and home service Chairman of t he Fort Bend County chapter of the American Red Cross. She died 1948 in Sugarland, Texas at approximately 90 year s of age, at the Laura Elridge Hospital. Her body was inter red about October 14, 1948 in Richmond, Texas.

In 1910 he moved to Houston to assume the duties of exa mining surgeon for the Southern Pacific Railway, a positio n he held until his retirement. Robert died July 14, 1934 i n Houston, TX at 73 years of age at the Southern Pacific Ho spital in Houston,TX. . Funeral services were held at Sette gast Kopf Funeral Home, Houston. Bishop Clinton S. Quinn an d Rev. Thos. J. Windham officiating. In 1910 living in hi s household were: brother-in law Samuel Munroe, sister-in-law Nettie, Willi e L. aged 1 and Douglas age 5 months.

Jesse HARRISON Jesse was born Sept. 12, 1791 and farmed in South Carolin a where he married Elizabeth WILSON and had two children, I saac and Mary, before his first wife died . In 1825 he move d to Georgia to engage in gold mining and married Margare t HULSEY, daughter of Elijah and Sarah Naomi Choate HULSEY . The urge to study medicine prompted him to move to Ohio f or schooling and then to Tennessee to practice medicine. Ei ght children were born to them. The family settled in Sumne r Co., TN in 1831, later moving to Clarksville, in 1842 t o Nashville and then to Hickman Co., KY and finally to Obio n Co., TN. settling near Troy. He was very active in politi cs. Ca. 1859 Jesse Harrison, living in Obion Co., TN, was p laced in the guardianship of Wm. O. Smith, and later in th e guardianship of his son, Dr. John Bates Harrison, who pos ted a bond of $300 with the court. He died in 1860 and wa s buried in Sanders Chapel, 5 miles S of Union City,TN.
