General Notes (Husband)
GEORGE HARRISS
"The son of Dr. William James Harriss and wife Mary Jennings, was born in Wilmington, N.C., July 27th, 1827, and died November 9th, 1899, at 5:30 A.M. He was educated at Donaldson Academy, near Fayetteville, N.C. He went first into business in the employ of Mr. R.W. Brown, and subsequently with Mr. George W. Davis, Ship Broker. About 1847, when he came of age, he formed a co-partnership with Mr. Henry P. Russell, under the firm name of Harriss and Russell, in the ship brokerage business."
"Brother Harriss petitioned for the degrees of Masonry in St. John's Lodge and was elected August 31st, 1848. Was made an Entered Apprentice September 12th, 1848, a Fellow Craft September 13th and a Master Mason September 18th, 1846."
"Mr. Russell, shortly after this, withdrew from the firm, and Mr. Harriss for some time conducted the business alone, but later took in with him his brother, Dr. W. W. Harriss, and Mr. Andrew J. Howell. they did a very successful business, and in later years the firm was George Harriss Son & Company. Thus for many years he was identified with shipping and commercial interests of this City. When the Chamber of Commerce was organized in 1853 he was on of the charter members, taking a lively interest in the management and was at one time its President. He was a member of the Produce Exchange and a director of the old Commercial Bank, and also a director of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad Company."
"During the Civil War, he was appointed Aid on the Staff of Governor Brown, of Georgia, with the rank of Colonel, and Agent for the State of Georgia, for shipment of cotton from this port, receiving supplies for the volunteers of the Confederate Army. For years Mr. Harriss was President of the Seaman's Friend Society, established here long before the war."

General Notes (Husband)
NEHEMIAH TAYLOR HARRISS:
"Was the son of Dr. William James Harriss and wife Mary Jennings. He was born in the City of Wilmington, N.C., on November 2nd, 1829. When a young man he moved to Bladen County, there he married April 15th 1851, Miss Mary McI. Robeson; there he engaged in farming near the town of Whitehall. The Civil War broke up the system of farming throughout the south, dispersed the laborers. bankrupted the planter whose capital was gone and left him to no other resort than tenant farming with improvident and ignorant freedmen. Under these circumstances Mr. Harriss was forced to remove to town, both for protection and support of his family. Coming to Wilmington he formed a co-partnership with Henry P. West, in the grocery business, which was continued until his death. He was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 and as one of the brethren who signed the request for a Dispensation to form Wilmington Lodge. He died April 23rd, 1872, before the Dispensation was granted."

General Notes (Husband)
"The Old Academy lots at Third and Princess Streets were purchased by the Town of Wilmington in July 1854, but probably plans for a theatre and town hall on the site had been under consideration for some time." "Plays continued to be given in the Old Academy theatre until the Town finally acquired legal title to the land in May 1855. Mayor O.G. Parsley and Isaac Northrop were appointed a committee to execute plans and arrangements with the Thalian Association. " Enough of the foundation had been laid to permit the cornerstone ceremonies on St. John's Day, December 27, 1855. The cornerstone ceremonies were conducted by Isaac Northrop, a commissioner and Past Master of St. John's Lodge." Source: http://thalian. wilmington.org/sonct01.html

In the name of God, Amen! I, Isaac Northrop of the town of Wilmington, in the State of North Carolina, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make ordain and publish this to be my last Will and Testament.
First I desire and direct that all my just debts be paid as soon after my death as can conveniently be done; and to that end I authorize and empower my executors of my estate, real and personal in such way and upon such terms as may be deemed most advantageous; and in their discretion to make the proceeds of any real estate so sold, the primary fund for the payment of my debts to the exoneration of the personal estate.
Second I give, devise and bequeath all the rest and residue of m;y estate of every kind, and whereso ever situate, after the payment of my debts, to my beloved wife Susan. until my youngest living child shall arrive at full age, or marry, in order to enable her to live in comfort and maintain and educate my younger children; and upon the arrival at full age, or marriage, of my youngest living child, as aforesaid, then I give on third of all the said residue of my estate real and personal, to my said wife Susan, absolutely; and the other two thirds to be divided among all of my children in such a way that the shares of all shall be equal, except my daughter Caroline Carr, whose share shall be less in value by one thousand dollars, than the shares of my other children.
Third In case my wife should die before the arrival at full age, or marriage, of my youngest living child, then upon her death, I give devise, and bequeath the whole of my estate, real and personal after payment of my debts, to my executor hereinafter named until the arrival at full age, or marriage of my youngest living child; in trust, however, during the period aforesaid, to apply the annual income, rents and profits of my said estate, to the comfortable and genteel support, maintenance and education of my minor children who are unmarried; and if the income of my estate shall be more than sufficient for the support and education of my minor unmarried children, then all such surplus income beyond what is requisite for that purpose, shall, during the period aforesaid, be annually divided equally among all my children; and upon the arrival at full age, or marriage, of my youngest living child, I give the whole of my said estate to be equally divided among all of my children, except my daughter Caroline Carr, whose share shall be one thousand dollars less in value than the shares of my other children, as before declared.
Fourth If any of my children shall die before the division of estate as directed in the two preceding clauses, the issue of each and any child so dying (if such issue be living at the time of said division) shall represent their parent, and take the share of my estate which such parent would have taken if living.
Lastly, I constitute and appoint my wife Susan and my son Samuel to be Executrix and Executor of this my will.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Twenty Third day of July A.D. 1859.
Signed published & declared by the testator as his last will in the Isaac Northrop ((signature) presence of us, who in his presence (seal) and the presence of each other, and at his request, have subscribed the same as witnesses.

General Notes for Child Samuel Northrop
SAMUEL NORTHROP "Was first made Worshipful Master under Dispensation by appointment of Grand Master, Charles C. Clark, and he was also the first Master regularly elected, and served us seven years in succession. He was born February 1834, at Wilmington, N.C., and was the son of Past Master Isaac Northrop of St. John's Lodge No. 1 and wife Susan Northrop. Having been brought up under his father in the lumber business he continued to follow it during life, and at one time carried on a very large trade in lumber with the West Indies. Bred up in a family of masons he naturally sought to become associated with them and was initiated in St. John's Lodge, where under his father's teaching, he became deeply interested in the order. On November 3rd,, 1864, he was made an Entered Apprentice, A Fellow Craft January 4th, 1865, and a Master Mason February 13th, 1865. Having a rich and pleasing voice, like his father, he could give with fine effect the beautiful lectures of the degrees."
"Brother Northrop was a most charitably disposed man and his religion impelled him to be gentle and unobtrusive, and the experience of life taught him not to make a fierce onslaught upon the faults of others, but to be tolerant towards the weaknesses of human nature. He was kind and generous to a fault with his means. Prominent both in Church and business and deeply interested in the public schools. He for years served on the school committees of the County. He enjoyed the good things of life without abuse and loved the humor of social company. The inflection of voice with which many relatives and friends addressed him on the street as 'Uncle Sam', was a reflex of his own genial nature. In latter days he was still a remarkably active man, and until two years before his death he showed no evidence of weakness. He was stricken with paralysis in the forenoon of October 14th, 1909, and died at 8:30 P.M that evening."
"Though he has gone from our midst, we still feel his presence when we remember our pleasant association with him in life. Ca not some of you, my Brethren, yet recall the refrain of that melodious voice and even feel that you can hear him say, "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh when thou shalt, say, I have no pleasure in the.' When I last saw Brother Northrop there was kindness and pleasure in his heart."

General Notes for Child William Harriss Northrop
WILLIAM HARRISS NORTHROP
"Is a brother to our late Past Master, Samuel Northrop. He was born at Wilmington, N.C., July 3rd, 1836. He was made a Mason in St. John's Lodge after the Civil War. At the outbreak of the war, being a member of the Wilmington Light Infantry, he went to Fort Caswell where he was for a time engaged in drilling raw recruits. Later becoming a part of the Third North Carolina Regiment of Infantry and was engaged in the fights around Richmond. He was appointed Captain in the Quartermaster Department, and in January, 1864, returned to Wilmington to obtain his bond. Not succeeding in obtaining it at the time, he resigned from the service and was appointed to a position in the Engineer service on the river. He was witness to the fight at Fort Fisher and the last fight at Bentonsville, N.C. He was in business after the war with the firm of Northrop and Cumming."

General Notes for Child John Taylor Northrop
There are no Northrops listed in the 1860 South Carolina Census from Marion District. John T. Northrop is listed in the 1870 South Carolina Census Index as 24 years of age, male, white, birthplace - NC, living in Marion, Marion Township. Therefore, one can assume that he moved to Marion sometime between 1860 and 1867 when he married. (MGHB/2002)
Numerous historical references have been found that document a yellow fever epidemic beginning in 1862 in Wilmington, NC, which decimated the local population. This epidemic and other sicknesses brought in by soldiers from the Civil War, continued until the end of the war. Much of the healthy local population fled the city. (MGHB/2002)
"The population evacuated as much as possible, many of the wealthier citizens leaving behind a hired associate to maintain correspondence and transact simple matters." Source: www.fortunecity.com/millennium/hollyoaks.410/Yellow.Fever.htm
"With the onset of the Civil War, John D. Taylor's lifestyle was shattered. He led the Red Brigade at the Battle of Bentonville and lost an arm in the process. His son, Walker, was born 26 October 1864, in Marion, South Carolina where his mother had fled to escape the yellow fever epidemic in Wilmington. Harsh economic pressures of reconstruction probably thrust Walker Taylor into the business world at the age of 14 when he went to work as an office boy for the deRosset and Northrop Insurance Agency." Source: http://brigadebgc.org/our_history.html
I do not know at this point, whether the above article relates to our Northrops. However, at the very least it shows that some residents of Wilmington fled to Marion, SC, where our own John Taylor Northrop was living at the time of his marriage. (MGHB/2002)

General Notes for Child Nehemiah Taylor Harriss
