There has been some controversy as to the parentage of the Abner Moore who marred Elizabeth Hastings in 1769. This marriage is recorded at Bolton on November 16, 1769. The intention is not recorded.
One theory is that it was Abner, born 1736, son of John (4) and Susanna Willard Moore. The other theory being that it was Abner (6), son of Samuel (5) (older brother of Abner (5)) and his wife, Zeresh Houghton. Following the death of Zeresh, Samuel married Abigail Hastings, sister of Elizabeth. Their intention to marry is entered at Lancaster, Massachusetts on December 12, 1775.
The following may help to clarify and identify her husband:
Through the efforts of a researcher from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, a deed was found for the sale of property set off to Benjamin Hastings in the right of Abigail Hastings, wife of Benjamin. One of the heirs to that part of the estate of Richard Sawtell, late of Bolton, deceased, which was set off to Abigail Sawtell, widow of Richard. Among those mentioned as having an interest in the sale of this property were Samuel Moore, blacksmith, and Abigail, wife of Abner - all of Chesterfield, New Hampshire. This deed may be found in Vol. 104, p. 83, Worcester Co. Registry of Deeds and is dated April 4, 1787.
Since there has been no evidence that Samuel and Zeresh Moore named a child Samuel, and since both Samuel and Abner figure in the estate of Abigail Hastings, mother of Elizabeth and Abigail, it is believed that Samuel(5) and Abner(5) are the sons of John(4) and Susanna Willard Moore. It is this Abner(5), born in 1736, who married Elizabeth Hastings.
It is known that Abner and Elizabeth Moore were in Chesterfield, New Hampshire in November 1787 when they signed the deed listed above. Abner Moore is listed in the census for Chesterfield in 1790 with two males over the age of 16, two males under the age of 16 and four females. When Abner removed to Chesterfield is not known. "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War" states in Vol. X, page 915:
MOORE, ABNER, Bolton. Private, Captain Benjamin Hastings Co., Col. John Whitcomb's
Regt.; company receipt for wages for August 1775, dated Camp at Prospect Hill.
It is probable that they removed to Chesterfield following the Revolution. However, early records in Chesterfield were either destroyed, are missing or were not started until well into the 1800's. The only Moore mentioned in the "History of Chesterfield, New Hampshire" is an Alpheus Moore who was listed as a Town Trustee in 1790.
General Notes for Child Benjamin Moore
The only evidence that has been found regarding the children of Abner and Elizabeth Hastings Moore is from the family Bible which states that Benjamin was the son of Abner Moore and was probably born in New Hampshire.
This Bible was in the possession of the late Mrs. Fred Passenger of Ithaca, Michigan. Mrs. Passenger descended from Benjamin and Lydia Wilcox Moore through their daughter, Elizabeth Ovanda Jane Moore. Through the kindness of Mrs. Passenger, the Bible is now in the keeping of Elizabeth McCaughin of Ticonderoga, New York.
