Edgar Eugene Hayes was born October 1, 1895. He lived on the farm at home in the Purlear Community until 1918. He worked two years on the first road that was built through the community, now called old sixty. He spent one year working in Winston-Salem, NC then came back home and went to work for N Wilkesboro Candy Co, Forester Beverage Co, and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company. Owner of this business was N. S. Forester SR. (Numa) I spent 46 years at this job, lacking 35 days. I retired on February 10, 1968 and lived around the old home place. I married Vertie Watts on November 30, 1924. She was the daughter of Manley Watts and Alice Yates Watts. To this union were born 4 children. Bruce Hamilton Hayes, Edgar Eugene Jr., Alice Marie. and Thelma Lee. Eugene died on March 10, 1936 at 8 years of age. Bruce was born at Purlear in his Grandmother Watts home. We moved to N Wilkesboro in 1925 and lived there until July 1936 when we moved into our home at Purlear, NC Vertie had one major operation in July 1973 or June 1974. E. E. Hayes died on December 17, 1989 in Wilkes General Hospital at the age of 94 years 2 months 16 days. (Sunday) Buried New Hope Baptist Church December 20, 1989.
More notes form E. E. Hayes Edgar Eugene Hayes was born in the year October 1, 1895, but don't know for sure where. As I remember we lived at Millers Creek in a house that set about where the west end of the intersection of 421 now is. The old road ran between this house and the Filmore Wyatt store close to where the big oak tree still stands. We next lived down the hollow below where the NorthWestern Bank is. I must have been five or six years of age. We lived next door on the creek in a small house called by most of the people now as the Newt Cooper home. We believe a Mr. Cox lives there now in a new house. Of course this is in the Purlear Community. We moved from there to where Richard's family now lives in a different house. This was about 1904 or 1905. As we stated in our memo our Father worked in Virginia several years and he moved the family to Pocahontas Virginia in 1906 . We lived there in parts of 1906 and 1907. We came back home in the late fall of 1907 or early 1908. We all grew up here where Richard's family lives. After Daddy died, we had to work the farm at home and I worked for other people when I could. My first job away from home was one weeks work at the Oak Furniture Factory, now American Drew I believe. My next job was at Meadows Mill for three or four months. I next went to work on the first road that was built through this part of Wilkes County. This was in November 1918. I worked on that job until February 1920. I then went to Winston-Salem and worked as a carpenter for a while there with Hurley Hill Furniture. I came home and did more road work most of 1921. I went to work at the N Wilkesboro Candy Company and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company March 25, 1922. Wound up spending 46 years there lacking 35 days.

General Notes (Wife)
Mom's health began to fail in 1970. Dad kept her at home and looked after her as long as he could get help to help out at their home.
Mom spent the last 6 years of her life in a nursing home in Elkin NC. She was placed in the nursing home October 1, 1979 and stayed there until she passed away on June 17, 1985 at about 11 PM. She was buried on June 20, 1985 at New Hope Baptist Church at Purlear, NC. John Thomas Vannoy 111 and Hunter Church were in charge of the service. She was the last one from the Manley Watts family to pass away.
To the best of my memory, Mother never worked at any public works. She was always busy around home doing housework and looking after the four of us children. She was a good cook and mother, and a hard worker at home. She and Dad both sang in the church choir for several years after we moved to the home in Purlear, We attended New Hope Baptist Church at Purlear, which is near the home where she grew up. Her Brother Finley Colman Watts was a minister and at one time was Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church.
