General Notes (Husband)
[1735328.ged]
[BeamandWilson.FTW]
From the notes of M. Fenimore: Individual: Thomas William Hayes was always known as "Bill" to his family. However, he worked as a cowbo y for many years of his life, and liked to be called "Tex". He was given to wearing "ten gall on hats", cowboy boots, jeans and western-style shirts. He carried a sack of Bull Durham loos e tobacco in his shirt pocket and rolled his own cigarettes. He also carried a can of "snoose " (Copenhagen chewing tobacco) which he chewed, and always needed a place to spit. He took de light in asking children if they wanted some gum, and then pulling out his can of snoose. H e had nicknames for everyone, and hardly ever called anyone by their given name. He was quit e a colorful character, always kind and friendly. He was divorced from his wife, Nettie, afte r only a few years of marriage, but maintained a friendship with her and her second husban d all of his life. He never remarried. He and Nettie had two children, Violet and Myrtle, bu t Violet died soon after birth. Following is a poem published in Violet's obituary, written b y "her young aunt, Grace Hayes":
"The vacant place, the empty little cot, We see them day by day, And oh, it fills our hearts with care, Since our loved one went away.
But though the light has left us here, Like the setting of the sun, We'll trust Thee ever, Father dear, And say "Thy will be done
Bill lived at 9235 N. Allegheny Avenue in Portland, Oregon for many years Burial was in th e River View Abbey mausoleum

General Notes for Child Charles Baxter Hayes
[1735328.ged]
[BeamandWilson.FTW]
From the notes of M. Fenimore: Individual: Charles at one time had a Shoe Repair shop and spent most of his life in the shoe repair busi ness. He at one time had a store but his general occupation was a "Jack of all Trades". Charl es was a quiet easy going individual who was kind. The 1900 Census for Big Butte, Jackson Cou nty, Oregon shows Charles owning a farm on which his occupation is listed as farmer. The cen sus shows Charles, Mary his wife, and children Thomas, Cora, Emma and Charles brother as livi ng in the household. Living on the farm next door is his sister Zora and her husband James Ra yborn. Next to Zora is the home of Ella Meeker. Charles Baxter Hayes and Mary Jane Ankrom wer e married on August 1, 1893 in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, at 2:45 PM. Charles, who wa s known as "Charlie" all his life, was a "Jack of All Trades". He at one time had a shoe repa ir shop, he hired out as a farm laborer, he worked as a painter, anything he could do to mak e a living. The 1900 census for Big Butte, Jackson County, Oregon, shows Charlie as ownin g a farm and his occupation is listed as farmer. In April of 1924 the census for Portland, Or egon shows him as owning a shoe shop in Portland. They moved around a lot, and every one of t heir twelve children was born in a different town, county or state.
In 1899, June 3, Charlie and Mary Jane, with their three children, Thomas (Bill), Cora and E thel, set out from Iowa for Oregon. Charlie's parents and family were already in Oregon, an d had been urging the young family to come out. The first leg of the journey was by horse an d wagon. They reached the Nebraska line on June 24, 1899, and camped at Ames, NE for 27 days . They then continued their journey until October, 1988, camping near Silver City, Idaho unti l December 22. (These lay-overs were probably for Charlie to work for a while and accumulat e some more money.) Then they sold the horses and wagon and took the railroad at Murphy, Idah o on December 24, for Portland, Oregon. On December 25, they made the final leg of the journe y by stage coach from Portland to Central Point, Oregon, arriving late at night on December 2 6, 1899. (Mary Jane always said that the stage driver was drunk, and just about overturned th e coach while fording a river.) They stayed with Charlie's parents, Louisa and Thomas, unti l February, 1900, when they moved to a rented farm on "Box Creek" .
From then until 1914, they moved many times, and in July of 1914 they packed up everything t o move to Meridian, Idaho, where a friend of Charlie's had told him it was a good place to op en a store. By this time they had nine children and Mary Jane was expecting the 10th. On this journey, Cora, who was then 18, drove one wagon and Charlie drove the other. Bill was ma rried by this time and didn't go. Cora kept a diary of their journey, which is in the possess ion of Shirley Beach Phillips. They arrived near Boise, Idaho on August 25, 1914, and camped in a tent until September 10, when they moved into a house. On October 12 they moved a gain near Nampa and stayed there for a short time, then moved to Meridian. Walter was born o n Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1914 in Meridian, Idaho. It evidently quickly became apparen t that they could not make a living in Meridian (for whatever reason), and in January, 1915 t hey sold everything and moved back to Halsey, Oregon. From then until 1933 they moved fiftee n times, all within the state of Oregon. Mary Jane had kept a log of all the places they lived, but the log ended in 1933. Charlie died in 1945, and they had moved just a s often in all of the years between 1933 and 1945.
Charlie was a kind and gentle man, much loved by his children. He did most of the cooking, a nd Cora remembers him fondly as working in the kitchen with a dishtowel thrown over his shoul der. She said he made wonderful baking powder biscuits. He played the fiddle for country dances, playing and tapping his foot in time. He also told stories and sang to the children , songs that had been passed down from generation to generation, old folk ballads. In the 193 0s and '40s, as an older man, he loved to listen to the radio, and his favorite program was " The Lone Ranger". He never missed it if he could help it. He died of leukemia at the age of 7 7. Burial is in the Riverview Abbey in Portland, Oregon. Charles is located in the MAPLE room o f the mausoleum forth up on the left next to his wife in a joint cript.Charles sold his sho e repair shop on this day. Births in Jefferson County, Iowa 1880-1899, Page 110 shows the occ upation of Charles as a Painter
Marriage: Charles and Mry were married by Rev. G. W. Mapes at 2:45 pm. At the time of the marriage Mar y was living in Glasgow, Iowa.
