General Notes (Husband)
William Edward Hayne was not quite five when his father wa s executed, but remembered visiting him on his last night . William was elected Comptroller of South Carolina in 1839 . Of his father's properties, only the iron works in York C ounty, which had been rebuilt after being destroyed by a Br itish force under a Captain Huck in 1780, remained. Willia m struggled with this business for several years and manage d to sell out for enough to cover the family's debts. He ma rried Eloisa Davidson Brevard, known as a spectacular beaut y, in 1806. They had six children, including our ancestor I saac William Hayne, before her death in 1820. William the n married his cousin, Elizabeth Peronneau Hayne, and had e ight more children. The South Carolina Gazette of 20 July , 1765 carried a report of William and Eloisa's marriage, a nd Salley's "Marriage Notices" also confirms the date.

FRANKLIN BREVARD HAYNE Member of the ancient and honored Hayne family of South Ca rolina, Franklin Brevard Hayne has achieved success in th e business world as a cotton merchant in New Orleans, Louis iana, his present home. Hayne, of whom this i s chiefly a record, received his early education at the fam ous private school of Dr. A. Sachtleben, in Charleston. an d in 1873 entered upon his business career with Watson and Hill, a co tton firm of Charleston. Ten years later, in 1183, he becam e engaged in the cotton brokerage business at Montgomery, A labama, with H. De L. Vincent, under the firm style of Vinc ent and Hayne. The business was soon afterward removed to V icksburg, Mississippi, and other branches were established . Daniel Partridge, of Selma, Alabama, was a partner in th e business for four or five years, having furnished a capit al of $10,000. A branch was opened in New Orleans in 1885 , with Mr. Hayne in personal charge; and on the retiremen t of Mr. Vincent, in 1905, the original firm was dissolved . Since that time, Mr. Hayne has conducted the business hi s own name.
The success of the enterprise soon became known througho ut the cotton world; and Mr. Hayne was to participate mor e and more extensively in other business undertakings in th e South. He has served as president of the East Louisiana R ailroad and the Canal Company and as president of the Poite vent Tavre Lumber Company and the Vincent and Hayne Realt y Company. He is also vice-president of the New Industria l Canal Land and Harbor Development Company, Limited, and t he Industrial Companv, and is a director in the D. H. Holme s Companv, Limited, and the New Orleans and North-Eastern R ailroad Company. He is especially active in reclamation wor k in the suburbs of New Orleans. Along with his other activ ities, Mr. Hayne has served as president of the New Orlean s Cotton Exchange and vice-president of the New Orleans Cha rity Hospital.
