General Notes for Child Paul Hamilton Hayne

HAYNE, Paul Hamilton, poet, was born in Charleston , S C., Jan. 1, 1830; son of Lieut. Paul Hamilton Hayne, U. S.N., who died at Pensacola, Fla., of yellow fever, in 1831 . He was brought up by his mother, a woman of poetic gift s and possessed of an ample fortune, under the guardianshi p of his uncle, Senator Robert Y. Hayne. He was graduated a t the College of Charleston in 1850, with prizes for Englis h composition and elocution. He was admitted to the bar, bu t never practised, and soon devoted his entire time to lite rature. His first poem "On the Ashley River" was publishe d locally. He edited Rassell's Magazine, 1853, and was conn ected editorially with the Charleston Literary Gazette, Sou thern Opinion, Southern Society and other periodicals. He w as an aide on the staff of Governor Pickens and took part i n the operations leading to the capture of Fort Sumter in 1 861. His home was burned during the bombardment of Charlest on by the Federal army and his valuable library destroyed w ith the ancestral belongings of a celebrated family, the ac cumulation of generations. He was married in 1852, to Mar y Middleton, daughter of Dr. William Michel, surgeon in th e army of Napoleon I. His health failed during the war, an d in 1866 he made his home at Copse Hill, on the summit o f the sandhills near Augusta, Ga. There he built a rude cot tage, made beautiful by vines of roses and jasmine, and liv ed with his wife and son in semi-seclusion, laboring with h is pen for support. His son, William Hamilton Hayne, inheri ted his father's frail physique and his poetic talent. Wash ington and Lee university conferred on him the honorary deg ree of LL.D. in 1882. His published works include: Poems (1 855); Sonnets and Other Poems (1857); Avolio, a Legend of t he Island of Cos (1859); Legends and Lyrics (1872); Henry T imrod: Poems With a Memoir (edited, 1873); The Mountain o f the Lovers and Other Poems (1875); and Lives of Robert Y . Hayne and Hugh S. Legare (1878). His Complete Poems wer e published in 1882. After that he wrote enough poetry to f ill a large volume, most of which appeared in periodicals . He died at Copse Hill, Augusta, Ga., July 6, 1886.
