Today is the birthday anniversary of Colonel Arthur P. H ayne hero of the War of 1812. A native of Charleston, h e began his military career in 1807. When the frigate Chesa peake was attacked, he secured a commission as first lieute nant in a regiment of light dragoons, commanded by Colone l Wade Hampton of Revolutionary war fame. In 1809 he was se nt by Hampton to Mississippi, where he laid the Foundatio n for his later career. He fought in the battle of Sackett' s Harbor, was brevetted major for gallantry in action, acco mpanied General Wilkinson down the St. Lawrence in the cont emplated attack on Montreal and also served with General Br own . In 1814 he became inspector general, with orders t o join General Andrew Jackson in the Creek nation. In the a bsence of Colonel Butler he also acted as adjutant general . Jackson sent him to Fort Montgomery to organize forces fo r an attack upon Pensacola. In the storming of the city, Co lonel Hayne was one of the first to take possession of an e nemy battery under heavy fire. After its fall,he was place d in charge of the city. In the famous battle of New Orle ans, he selected the site for Jackson's defense and had muc h to do with repulsing the British and saving the city, a s did Major Wade Hampton of Columbia. After the battle Jack son sent Hayne to Washington to secure additional troops fo r the continued defense of the city, not realizing-that th e war had ended. During the war he was thrice brevetted fo r bravery. Elected to the legislature to represent Charlest on, he was a prominent and efficient legislator, chairman o f the military committee, and a presidential elector. He we nt to Europe as agent for naval affairs in the Mediterranea n, remained there almost five years, and later declined th e offer of the post as minister to Belgium. Colonel Hayn e died January 6, 1867, survived by his widow, Elizabeth La ura Hayne.
