General Notes (Wife)

Her mother became pregnant on the slave ship by the captain of the ship, whose name was Captain Hemings. Betty Hemings had 14 children by four different men, according to her grandson, Madison Hemings. Betty Hemings was mentioned in the will of John Wayles, thus providing evidence that she really was his mistress and not merely his slave.

General Notes for Child Betty Brown

She was born as the slave of John Wayles, but apparently was given as dowery to Thomas Jefferson when Thomas Jefferson married Martha Wayles in 1772. She later became reunited with her brothers and sisters when John Wayles died and Thomas Jefferson inherited most of the rest of his slaves. Some believe that Betty Brown was the original slave mistress of Thomas Jefferson before Sally came along, since the children of Betty Brown were always given special treatment.

Believed to be the son of John Neilson. However, because of the important position he was given at Monticello plus the fact that he was freed in the will have led some to suspect that his real father may have been Thomas Jefferson.

This indenture witnesseth that I Thomas Jefferson of the county of Albemarle have manumitted and made free Robert Hemings, son of Betty Hemmings: so that in future he shall be free and of free condition, with all his good and chattels and shall be discharged of all obligation of bondage or servitude whatsoever: and that neither myself, my heirs, executors or administrators shall have any right to exact from him hereafter services or duties whatsoever, in witness whereof I [here__] seal to this present deed of manumission. Given in Albemarle this twenty fourth day of December one thousand seven [hundred] and ninety four.

General Notes for Child James Hemings

A slave of Thomas Jefferson who Jefferson took with him to France for training as a cook. James Hemings witnessed the storming of the Bastille. Later, Thomas Jefferson brought him back to America, where he served as a cook while Thomas Jefferson was Secretary of State in Philadelphia in 1792. Thomas Jefferson gave him his freedom 1796. James Hemings went north but killed himself in Philadelphia in 1801. This incident made Thomas Jefferson reluctant to free other slaves.

------------------------------------------------------------------------- This indenture made at Monticello in the county of Albemarle of commonwealth of Virginia on the fifth day of Febraury one thousand seven hundred and ninety six witnesseth that I Thomas Jefferson of Monticello aforesaid do emancipate manumit and make free James Hemings, son of Betty Hemings, which said James is now of the age of thirty years so that in future he shall be free of free condition, & discharged of all duties & claims of servitude whatsoever, & shall have all the right and privileges of a freedman. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand & seal on the day & year above written and have made these presents double of the same date, tenor & indenture one whereof is lodged in the court of Albemarle aforesaid to be recorded, & the other is delivered by me to the said James Hemings to be produced when and where it may be necessary.

General Notes for Child Thenia Hemings

Sold and became the property of President James Monroe.

General Notes for Child Sally Hemings

There is no record of any marriage between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings. However, the way the software I use works is that if a man and a woman have a child together, then they were married.

I have selected the date of 6 April 1789 for the "marriage", because there is evidence that this is the date that Sally and Tommy became sweethearts.

Thomas Jefferson's account book shows that on April 6, 1789 he spent 96 francs on "clothes for Sally". Then, on April 16, 1789, he spent 72 francs on more clothes for Sally. Then, on April 26, 1789 he spent 23 francs on "making clothes for servants". Finally, on May 25, 1789, he "paid making clothes for Sally 25 francs."

This is the only time before or after that the records of Thomas Jefferson show him buying anything at all for Sally or for any of his other slaves.

Thus, it appears more than likely that it was in April, 1789 that he started having relations with her. Also, the entire volume of his letters is missing for the year 1789. It appears likely that the letters for that year were destroyed because they contained references to the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings.

Ran away in 1822. However, she obviously did not run away because in the memoirs of Edmund Bacon, a white overseer for Thomas Jefferson, he says that he gave her $50 stage fare to take a stage to Washington, as she had turned 21 years old. Her subsequent whereabouts are a mystery. Some say she married a white man as she was 7/8ths white and lived the rest of her life in Charlottesville.

General Notes (Husband)

Lady GODIVA Countess Of Mercia is the 26th great grandmother of Thomas JEFFERSON.

General Notes (Wife)

Ancestor of Dr. Edward Graham Jefferson, retired Chairman of DuPont Chemical Corp.

General Notes for Child Harriet II Hemings

Ran away in 1822. However, she obviously did not run away because in the memoirs of Edmund Bacon, a white overseer for Thomas Jefferson, he says that he gave her $50 stage fare to take a stage to Washington, as she had turned 21 years old. Her subsequent whereabouts are a mystery. Some say she married a white man as she was 7/8ths white and lived the rest of her life in Charlottesville.
