Barnabas was also known as "Barney" apparently.

"Barney, who was probably the son of James Sweeney had two sons, Darby and John. Darby was the father of the late Dr. B.K. and Ephriam L. Henegan, of Marlborough. His daughters were Drusilla, who married L.E. Stubbs, and Lucretia, who married Alex. McCollum." Source: "History of the Old Cheraws" by Right Rev. General Notes for Child Darby Henagan

"Darby Henagan, a son of Barnabas and Lucretia Henagan, believed to have been born about 1774 in Marlborough District, South Carolina. The United States cencus of 1800 and 1810 shows that he was the head of a family in Marion District, South Carolina with numerous children. It is thought that he lived in the northeastern part of Marion District (the part which is now Dillon County) and near the Marlborough District line. It is believed that he died after 1818 as he was a witness to a conveyance of land to John Bethea on August 5, 1818 and the United States Census of 1820 does not show him as the head of a family either in Marion or Marlborough Districts so it is assumed that he died prior to the 1820 United States Census. He married Druscilla (surname, date of birth and death unknown)." Source: The Henagan Family, by John C. Henagan, 401 East Washington Street, Dillon, SC. See brief history of the early Henagan family as found in "Kinfolks" by William Curry Harllee (Vol. III, p. 2356-2373) Darby Henagan lived in South Carolina and North Carolina as found in the brief history sited above. Darby Henagan "did contribute to the cause of the American Revolution as found in records in the Dept. of Archives and History, State of North Carolina, Raleigh, NC: "The Accounts of the United States with North Carolina - War of Revolution - Vol IX, p. 57, Folio r, Book L. No. 20-24, Item no. 652 to D. Henegin paid 74 lbs. and 16 shillings." It is assumed that the D. Henegin and Darby Henagan were one and the same person as there are no records that show any name similar to Darby Henagan living in Richmond County, North Carolina about this period of time. I was informed at the Drpt. of Archives and History of NC that the D. Henegin that received the above mentioned pay was from Richmond County, NC. The U.S. Census of 1790 shows that Darby Henagan was the head of a household in Richmond County, NC. There are several deeds of land on record in the Clerk of Court's Office, Marion County, South Carolina, in which Darby Henagan of Richmond County, North Carolina deeded certain lands to Towers in the period 1787 thru 1810. These lands were in what is now Dillon County, SC (formerly Marion and Georgetown Counties, SC). Darby Henagan was made grants or patented lands in Craven County, SC on 28 November 1771." General Notes (Wife)

One source shows Druscilla as possibly being a Sweeney.

"Sellers' History of Marion county refers to Dr. Barnabas K. Henagan's mother as being a Bethea (Dr. Barnabas K. Hanagan was a son of Darby and Drusilla Henagan) and an old letter that Dr. Henagan wrote to a friend, William Johnson, in Williamsburg District, South Carolina on March 12, 1840 introducing Dr. Alfred W. Bethea gives some indication that the Henagan and Bethea families were related. The following extract of this letter is quoted: 'Dear Sir: The bearer hereof, my friend and relative, Doctor Alfred Bethea, has at my instance(sic) determined to visit your section of the country with the view to the selection of a situation in which to locate himself for the practice of medicine....'

Mr. David W.Bethea, who assisted Colonel William C. Harllee in compiling information for Kinfolks, had this to say regards the mother of Dr. B.K. Henagan and the following is quoted from Kinfolks, Volume III (p.2367): 'I think Sellers' statement that Governor B.K. Henagan's mother was a Bethea is a mistake. Mr. Sellers knew there was some connection between Henagan and Bethea families and probably thought it that way. (DWD).' "

General Notes for Child Barnabas Kelet Henagan

Had nine children by Mary Savage Gibson. Barnabas Kelet Henagan was a Senator from Marlboro and Marion Districts as well as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of South Carolina. "Barnabas Kelet Henagan was widely known in the political history and life of South Carolina, having taken a decided part in politics and filled various important offices. In 1834, he was elected by the District of Marlborough to the State Senate, and in the year succeeding the conclusion of his term of office, was elected by the General Assembly of South Carolina Lieutenant Governor under Governor Patrick Noble. On the death of Governor Noble April 7, 1840, he acceded to the executive office and discharged its duties until December 10, 1840, the remainder of the term."

"He afterwards moved to Marion District, South Carolina, and in 1844 was elected to the State Senate from this district. In 1846 he was elected Secretary of State of South Carolina, the duties which he discharged for four years, and on retiring from this, devoted himself to the pursuits and occupation of the planter, physician, and private citizen, without ceasing however, to take an active interest in all events and occurrences affecting the body politic. His attachment to the principles of Jeffersonian Democracy was decided and marked, and he was an ardent admirer of John C. Calhoun, whom he considered the best exponent of those principles."

"Governor Henagan was educated as a physician, thought to have been a graduate of Heidelberg University, Germany, and in the earlier period of his life devoted himself to the active duties and toils of his profession with such success as to command a large share of patronage, and conciliate general approval in Williamsburg, Marlborough, and Marion Districts of South Carolina. In all the relations of life he was simple hearted, unostentatious and faithful, cultivating the good will of all who came within his circle of intercourse."

As a result of Major Henagan an effort was undertaken to provide a marker on the grave of Barnabas Kelet Henagan and his wife Mary Savage Gibson Henagan in 1960. At this writing (May, 2002), an effort has not been made to substantiate whether or not this was actually done.)

"Dr. B.K. Henagan was not only prominent as a practicing physician fifty years ago, but as a politician also. In 1834 his people elected him to the State Senate and the Legislature elected him Lieutenant-Governor, and upon the death of Governor Noble, he was sworn in and filled out the unexpired term. He subsequently moved to Marion and was sent to the legislature again. " Source: "A History of Marlboro County" by Rev. J.A.W. Thomas, The Foote & Davies Co. 1897 ******************** "The only Marlboro physician to serve as Governor of South Carolina, Barnabas K. Henagan was born June 7, 1798, the son of Darby and Drusill Henagan. Family tradition states that he attended the Parnassus and Brownsville Academies in Marlboro and completed his medical training at Heidelburg University in Germany." "Dr. Henagan married (first) Mary Savage Gibson of Marion, South Carolina on April 21, 1831. They had nine children: James Hamilton, Mary Frances, Lucius Quintius Cincinnatus Calhoun, Andrew Barnabas, Robert Young Hayne, William Lowndes, Alice Caroline, Mary Rhoda Rugledge and Samuel Gordon Gibson. In 1851, Dr. Henegan married Ann Maria Wickham Ellerbe, widow of John C. Ellerbe." "Dr. Henagan was President of the Brownsville Minerva Academy in 1826. He was elected to the state senate in 1834. As Lieutenant-Governor under Governor Patrick Noble, he became Governor when Noble, died November 7, 1840, and served the remainder of the term until December 10, 1840. After moving to Marion District, Dr. Henagan was elected to the state senate again in 1844. In 1846, he became Secretary of State for South Carolina. He died January 10, 1855." Source: "Medicine Men in Marlboro County: 1736 to 1980" by Suzanne C. Linder, 1980 ******************** "Governor B.K. Henagan, speaking to the legislature in 1840m stated that a distinction must always be maintained between the educational riff-raff who taught in the 'pauper schools' and those splendid men and women who taught in the private, church, and society-owned schools. His observations of the teachers in the free schools were that they, with few exceptions, were very ignorant and possessed a very easy morality, but with the poor pay allowed them we could not expect better. To be a teacher in a free school was a reproach. He continued by stating that the men who were in charge of the public schools were those who could not get employment otherwise and were willing to accept the miserable pittance offered to them for their services." General Notes (Husband)

"The early Henagan family is believed to have come to the "Welsh Neck" settlement in The Cheraws District (now the part known as the Pee Dee section) of South Carolina prior to 1756 from North Carolina, Virgina, or Maryland. Since some members of the family used the name Sweeny, Swinny, etc. and some Henagan (Henegan, Hennigan, etc.) this has made it difficult to secure genealogical data on our early family." "Mrs. Louise N. Bissonette, 56 Society St, Charleston, South Carolina, a granddaughter of Dr. Barnabas K. Henagan (Governor of South Carolina in 1840) has stated a number of times that she had been told that we descended from a kinsman of Lord Baltimore named Sweeny that came over with him when Maryland was settled." General Notes (Husband)

There are no Northrops listed in the 1860 South Carolina Census from Marion District. John T. Northrop is listed in the 1870 South Carolina Census Index as 24 years of age, male, white, birthplace - NC, living in Marion, Marion Township. Therefore, one can assume that he moved to Marion sometime between 1860 and 1867 when he married. (MGHB/2002)

Numerous historical references have been found that document a yellow fever epidemic beginning in 1862 in Wilmington, NC, which decimated the local population. This epidemic and other sicknesses brought in by soldiers from the Civil War, continued until the end of the war. Much of the healthy local population fled the city. (MGHB/2002)

"The population evacuated as much as possible, many of the wealthier citizens leaving behind a hired associate to maintain correspondence and transact simple matters." Source: www.fortunecity.com/millennium/hollyoaks.410/Yellow.Fever.htm

"With the onset of the Civil War, John D. Taylor's lifestyle was shattered. He led the Red Brigade at the Battle of Bentonville and lost an arm in the process. His son, Walker, was born 26 October 1864, in Marion, South Carolina where his mother had fled to escape the yellow fever epidemic in Wilmington. Harsh economic pressures of reconstruction probably thrust Walker Taylor into the business world at the age of 14 when he went to work as an office boy for the deRosset and Northrop Insurance Agency." I do not know at this point, whether the above article relates to our Northrops. However, at the very least it shows that some residents of Wilmington fled to Marion, SC, where our own John Taylor Northrop was living at the time of his marriage. (MGHB/2002)

General Notes (Wife)

It is presumed that the following letter was written about Mary Henagan, who might possibly have lived into the early 1940's.

Letter was written by Henagan descendant, John Henagan of Dillon, SC on 1 May 1961, on a Carmichael Henagan Furniture Co. letterhead to Alice Gary Early, also a Henagan descendant:

Dear Alice

I overlooked giving you the information that I told you that I would send regarding Miss Mary Henagan's will when I wrote you earlier today. As I told you I looked up this one day while in Columbia after her death and found the following disposition made in the will to the following persons:

Mrs. Douglas McKay all jewelry and silver ware Burwell Dees Manning, Jr. - $1,000.00 Edward W. Mullins = Library valued at $100.00 (he was also Executor) J. Heywood Gibbes - $3,000.00 Mrs. Elizabeth Post - $500.00 Alma P. Thomas - Residue of her estate

She left some amount for the care of her dogs as we mentioned last week but I did not list it when I looked the will up in Oct. 1958.

Mrs. Post is a nurse and believe that she helped look after Miss Mary quite a bit and her daughter, Mrs. Alma P. Thomas, also visited her regularly and I am told that gave lots of care to her. Mrs. Alma P. Thomas was the person that looked after everything as best that I could tell for her funeral and burial.

I just thought that you might be interested in having this information and since I failed to include it in my earlier letter am getting it to you now.

Sincerely, John

At the same time and place by the same, Mr. A. Johnson of Marlboro District to Miss Alice Hennegan, eldest daughter of the late Gov. Hennegan." General Notes for Child Alice May Northrop

"Grannie's sister, Alice, married either a Lorick or a Turbeville. I remember her daughter, I think she finally moved to Florida. She visited Tanna (Mary Gary) in Charleston. I can remember her. Sometimes this daughter was referred to as Mary Lorick and sometimes Turbeville by Tanna. She had one son that I ever heard of and his name was Jack(?)." General Notes for Child Caroline Cumming Northrop

"Grannie" as she was known to her grandchildren, wholeheartedly believed in God and the Episcopal Church. She had her own pew, and anyone who would dare to sit there was asked to move to another pew. "Carrie" as she was known by friends, was also a master seamstress. She made beautiful baby clothes, some still in possession by the family. She made the clothes with lovely round thread lace and lawn(a soft cotton fabric like batiste). She made beautiful Charleston bonnets of organdie, in fact making them for others by order. She sewed to bring a little money in to run her household and survive. "Grannie" mended and laundered Rector Harold Thomas's vestments. Rector Thomas served St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Charleston and Grannie's granddaughter, Jeanne, remembers Rector Thomas visiting her when she was sick as a child She also remembers what a kind and popular man he was, often playing games and telling stories to the children. "Grannie" had a treadle sewing machine. Her granddaughter, Jeanne, used to love to sit on the floor and watch her peddle and treasured the times that her Grannie would help her learn to sew. Grannie made doll clothes for all of her granddaughters - Jeanne, "Trish", and Carol. "Grannie" was also a wonderful cook. On Saturday mornings, she and her cook, Viola, prepared breakfast for her black friends; Clement, the fish and shrimp man, who sold his seafood out of his hand pushed cart; Mattie, the vegetable woman who carried her wares on her head; Janie, the flower woman who sold flowers out of her huge sweetgrass basket which she balanced on her head as she walked.

General Notes for Child Constance Louise Northrop

No issue. However, according to Jeanne Northrop Early (Hagood), her nephews, Cuthbert and Harriss Liles, lived with her. She believes that they may have had some type of mental disability as they never were able to work.
