The original Hasculfus Musard born circa 1050 was a Breton Knight who accompanied William the Conq.on his conquest of England.His son Richard was dead by 1162(Ref The Red Book of the exchquer) His widow was holding 2Knt's fees as her dower. Richard's son Hasculfus Bpt 1123 was a witness to a land deed of William Rubra Spatha's . I Wm give and concede by my seal. that I confer on Eli de Brampton etc etc. Witnesses Hasulfus Musard his son Ralph and Williams son John (circa 1184) Hasculfus was dead by 1185.(ref Pipe pipe rolls). A William Rubra in 1216- 1272 was a great benefactor of St. Martin's Priory. Dover Kent.(Ref Ed Hasted) and held land at Appledore,Kent (ref Derby ,Museum Keeper of Antiquities) William Rubra was as not as far as my research shows ever linked to MIserden> The Caput of the Musard lands was Staveley in Derbyshire. Hasculfus 1 was a King's, Earl, Baron of Staveley and Lord of Miserden. The family only lived at the Castle of La Musarder when Hasculfus 1 Great/G Son Ralph took up residence circa 1200. Until then it was a Motte and Bailey. We have visited the site and it is just a large mound now. I have researched the history of La Musarder and it runs into many pages. MY family's descent is through Richard Musard who held half a moiety (Knts Fee) of the Arch.Bis.Cant.in Ash nxt Sandwich Kent in 1170. The family were in Ash from then until the 17th Centuary,when they were in The Isle of Thanet (Margate,Ramsgate etc. My Grandfather's direct male line goes back to 1430 in Ash. Our research is through Parish Records.Wills Call.of Rolls Curia Regis.and the Domesday Book. We have visited Cambridge Uni Library,Lambeth Palace Library Canterbury Cathedral Archives,ant Hq Soc of Genealogists We speculate that Richard(1170)is probably the eldest son of William Rubra. In the 12th Centuary it was usual for only the eldest son to take the family name (ie Musard) (Ref Domesday Book's Hasculfus held lands as a Tenant in Chief of the King in seven counties of England) On looking through some note's I wondered if there is more than one Wm Rubra Spatha Rosper . You show a Wm B1154 M Elinth Apuldore. A Wm Bpt 1175 also M Elnith Apuldore in 1215 at Staveley. I think it's possible that the 1175 Wm is the one who went to Kent. I would think that the original Wm Rubra was born circa 1126. but that's only speculative.
