He is almost certainly son of William and Catherine Herndon as shown(1). He is sometimes in correctly claimed to be child of a "LordHarrington". The person most frequently mentioned in this regard seemsto be John Harington, son of John Harington of Kelston (e.g. 2), who is known to have stayed in England(3) and who wasn't actually a Lord at all although of a noble family.The person whose involvement with Virginia may have served as the originof this claim was probably John, Lord Stanhope of Harrington, Councilor of Virginia, who wasn't aHarrington but a Stanhope (4). Two other candidates, both named John,Lord Harington of Exton, do not appear to have any association withVirginia (5).
