From Juanita Hewitt Smith:

1870 gilmer co census lists Joseph and Mahala with children Sarah E. 13, Daniel W. 10 Oliver V. 9 Roswell G. 7 Morinda J. 5 Charles L. 2 Samuel Judson 6 mos There were also children by the name of Henry K., George W., and Francis M. may have been others.

Daniel W. left wv in 1884 for Missouri. According to documentation of his daughter, who wa s 104 years old in 1991 Joseph and Mahala had 12 children. She states that mahalia Norman wa s a very religious mother who believed in healing and was of French Canadian blood. I hav e a copy of a death certificate for Mahala date of death is April 20, 1923. She is buried i n the cooley chapel cemetery in wood county. It lists her age as 81 years and cause of deat h Gen. Nervine, poison, bronchial Asthma. (interesting) Rosetta is listed as Royetta Hewit t DOD March 14, 1927 at 58 years of age, cause Sarcoma of uterus
