THOMAS HEYWARD, (born c. 1700, died March 1738/7), son o f Thomas Heyward and Margaret Wright, was the sole represen tative of this generation. From early youth he led an adven turous life, as a boy taking part in the expedition fitte d out by Governor Charles Craven to fight the Indians durin g the Yemassee uprising in 1715; his mother is said to hav e petitioned the Governor for his release, as he was an onl y son just sixteen years of age. In 1718 aboard the sloop " Revenge" in a naval expedition fitted out by Governor Rober t Johnson, he participated in the engagement which resulte d in the death of the pirate Richard Worly and the captur e of his sloop near the mouth of Charles Town harbor. It i s a matter of record that he applied for prize money as on e of the volunteer crew of the sloop "Revenge."
On March 25, 1724, Thomas Heyward was elected a member o f the Assembly. On April 14 1725,the commissioners were dir ected to be "forthwith prepared for Mr. Thomas Heyward to b e Captain of the James Island Company." In 1724, with Will iam Screven, he was appointed Inquirer of Collectors of Tax es on James Island. Also in 1754 with the passage of an Ac t for the better regulating of the patrol system, Thomas He yward was appointed commissioner of the James Island distri ct.
On June 4, 1719, he married Hester (Esther) Taylor, daug hter of John Taylor, Esq., of St. Andrew's Parish, and hi s wife Esther. By her he had seven children. He was apparen tly a citizen of means, for besides his plantations and sla ves on James Island, his advertisements in the South Caroli na Gazette indicate that he owned considerable real estat e in Charles Town.
His will is dated 7 March, 1736 and was probated 20 Janu ary, 1743.
