General Notes (Husband)
George Cary Hill was born in Needham, Massachusetts on July 12, 1868. His father, William Hill, Jr., a successful paper manufacturer, died December 12, 1873, of double pleuro pneumonia, when his oldest child (Papa) was just five years old.
GCH's siblings were: Edward Francis Hill, born February 26, 1870:diedApril 6, 1870.
Amelia Chambers Hill, born April 18, 1871: died July 8, 1902
Louisa Foster Hill, born December 6, 1873: died February 14, 1877
Herbert Edward Hill, born April 27, 1881 (OW): died ?
Apparently there was friction between Granny and the rest of the Hill family in Needham and she moved with her two remaining children to Cambridgeport where she is listed in the 1880 Census as living at 33 Green Street.
General Notes for Child Alice Chalmers Hill
Alice Chalmers HILL was born in Boston on May 30, 1905, the first child of Louise oestreicher HILL and George Cary HILL.
She lived with her family including Granny Hill (Amelia Augusta Johnson Hill) in Dorchester, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston from her birth until 1924 when the family moved to Brookline, Massachusetts (284 Dean Road). The house was large to hold the ten people living there. (Mama, Papa, Granny, and the six younger children)
Alice went to Girls' Latin School in Boston from which she was graduated in 1922. She continued her education at Wellesley College from which she was graduated in 1926.
She was always interested in fashion and after working at Slattery's in Wellesley she started the Triangle Shop on Church Street in Wellesley. Papa put up the money to start the venture and her two partners were Eleanor Mitchell, who handled the financial end and Thelma Tailby Skinner who knew merchandising. The shop was elegant and remains to this day, although Alice sold out her share in the forties.
The Hill family summered each year at Falmouth Heights on Cape Cod where we belonged to the Cottage Club. During one summer. Alice met Percy Franklin Smith who was a student at Brown and working at the Terrace Gables Hotel.
Papa died unexpectedly on September 29, 1929 from an embolus after an operation. It was a difficult year for the family. The stock market crash of October 1929, the loss of Papa, Granny's very old age, and Mama's deep sorrow combined to make everything most difficult.
Granny died on March 13, 1930. Mama suffered a severe stroke (they used to call it a {shock} in New England in those days) slipped into a coma, and died on May 8, 1930.
Alice, now engaged to "Wij" (Our Lottie's name for him) was married on August 23, 1930 and moved to Andover where Wij taught Latin at Phillips Academy. They lived in the America House (an Andover dormitory) and the following May 20, 1931, Georgia Cary Smith was born.
After a year of graduate work at Harvard Wij, Alice and Georgia moved to Bristol, Connecticut where Wij taught Latin at the local high school. Summertimes the family spent in Maine where Wij tutored at Long Lake Lodge.
After about ten years, the family moved to New York, living first in White Plains. Alice worked in Bonwit Teller's in White Plains and Wij commuted to New York City where he worked at NBC as head of Continuity Acceptance. They moved to Pleasantville, New York and Georgia went off to Northfield School, Wij commuted and Alice retired to have a lively social life of bridge, Contemporary Club and many elegant dinner parties.
Georgia took a post graduate year at Mary Burnham School in Northampton and then went to Wheaton College from which she was graduated in 1953. She married David Barnes Springer of Englewood, New Jersey, a Dartmouth graduate
A few years after Georgia's marriage, Alice and Wij moved to Chatham on the Cape where they had a house built. They lived in this house and enjoyed their retirement until Wij died in 1980. His funeral was held at their church, St. Christopher's in Chatham.
Alice moved to the minister's house (a rental) for a year or two and then moved to a condominium in North Chatham where she lived until January 1998 when her increasingly bad emotional and mental health made her living alone impossible. Her grand-daughter, Liz Springer Durham and liz's husband, Rob, moved her to a nursing home near them in Aurora, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Liz and Rob live not too far away in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
Alice lives there now (April 21, 1999) approaching her 94th birthday on May 30th and, as the nurse reports, "pleasantly confused".

General Notes for Child Louise Pauline Hill
Polly was well loved by all of us, as witness to the number of children named for her. Always destined to live a short life, Polly did not attend college as did Alice and Marie but went to Miss Choate's School in Brookline. She was a domestic sort and loved to cook. After Mama died and Alice got married and went off to live in Andover, Polly was in charge of the family, first at Dean Road and then an apartment. So, young as she was, she was our second mother.
Polly was quite fat but doctors insisted on her losing weight, which she did, and she did not live terribly much longer. She was in and out of the Baker Memorial part of Mass. General, spent time recuperating at a Mrs. Kellogg's house on either Beacon Street or Commonwealth Avenue, and died at the Vincent Memorial Hospital.
General Notes for Child Marie Frances Hill
Marie Frances Hill was born in Boston October 8, 1911.
She was the third daughter after Alice and Polly.
She was very bright and was graduated from Girls Latin and from Wellesley in 1932 where she majored in German.
As a young woman she dated Charles Dunker whose sister was our piano teacher. The Dunkers lived near us on Penniman Road and Charles was lots of fun. He was voted class clown at Brookline High School and then went on to William and Mary. He drank a lot and Marie never planned to marry him. She also dated seriously Karl Billhardt, known as Bill, who taught Math at Andover and also coached as he had been a football player at Yale. But then Marie met Norm White of New Haven, who had also gone to Yale, class of 1929. Norm worked in Boston for Socony Mobil.
Marie and Norm were married in 1936 in Bristol, Connecticut and had a small family reception at Alice and Wij's house at 142 Judd Street after the ceremony in the Congregational Church.
They lived outside of Boston in West Medford, Milton, then Wellesley. Their first child, Norman Cary White, known as "Westie", was born in Boston January 8, 1938.
After Norm was transferred to New York with Socony they lived first in Ridgewood, New Jerseyand child number 2, Cynthia Fletcher White was born in Hackensack, New Jersey on December 22, 1940.
After a few years in Ridgewood they moved to Hartsdale, New York in Westchester County where they lived at 55 Harvard Drive. Their next door neighbors were Lena and Hans Hansen and very good friends were Audrey and Hal Dennis. Both Hans and Hal were associated with CalTex, the overseas part of Texaco--Hans in Europe (The Hague) and Hal in India.
Westie went off to Mt. Hermon School where he was an excellent student, winning the physics prize. He chose MIT over Yale (where he was also accepted) and became a Deke there.
Cynthia went to Northfield School for Girls and then on to Goucher College in Baltimore.
Marie was certainly a stay at home Mom when the children were little. She had worked, before marriage, at The Thread and Needle Shop in Boston and for Luckenbach Steamship Lines. Since they were German, WWII wiped out that job. In Hartsdale she worked as a secretary at the school office in Chappaqua.
Westie was now in the Naval Reserve and had come home from Newport as a new Navy Ensign. There was a party in his honor at their house in Pleasantville and I was there without Bill, who had just broken his ankle and was in a cast. Cynthia was there and Audrey Dennis. After doing up the dishes, Norm and I sat talking until late. In the middle of the night he suffered a fatl stroke. He was only 58. Naturally, Marie was devastated. The funeral was held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Pleasantville.
Marie, Audrey and I drove out to California a couple of months later. We stopped overnight at thw MacGregors' lovely home in Springfield, Ohio. Susie and Westie had been married there a short time before. We went on West, touring the Grand Canyon and several other spots (my first trip west) and ended up in San Francisco where we stayed with Lena and Hans. Lena was very ill with emphysema and died not too long thereafter.
And so--Marie and Hans were married and Cynthia moved west where she met and married her spouse, Neil Spokes, and Westie and Susie followed when Westie received his MBA from Harvard Business (with distinction)
Marie and Hans lived first in San Francisco in the Sunset District and then moved to a lovely place in Santa Barbara on the Hope Ranch. Their marriage and life was to be altered tragically when the accident happened. The two had been North to see Eric (Hans' son) and Hans was driving back and fell asleep at the wheel. Marie was killed instantly.
Audrey Dennis and I flew out to the servioces in Santa Barbara at the Episcopal Church. She was cremated and her remains are in a crypt in Santa Barbara.
Marie and Norm's descendants are:
