General Notes (Husband)
Notes from B. J. Hill, Cooper, TX to Ronald G. Hill Sr., March 30,2000: Noah Hampton Hill died November 15, 1904 in Columbus, Polk County,North Carolina and is buri ed in the Wolfe Creek Baptist Cemeterylocated in Landrum, South Carolina. His education wa s limited to theadvantages only of common schools in log houses, with the exception ofa fe w terms at the Rutherfordton Academy. In 1838, he and hisparents moved to Spartanburg Count y, South Carolina. On October 17, 1843 he married Elizabeth Hannon and moved back toRutherford County, North Ca rolina. Polk County was organized out of this county; they lived there therest of their lives. In 1 885, four years after the death ofElizabeth, Noah married Emily B. Suddith of Taylors, Sout h Carolina.
Noah was a farmer, owning 234 acres of land. This land was located inPolk County, North Car olina and the South Carolina boundary was theSouth Carolina State line. He purchased this l and from JohnWilliams. On March 6, 1861, Noah and Elizabeth sold the propertywhich Elizabe th had inherited from the Hannon family. Later, Noahmoved to Columbus, North Carolina wher e he bought and operated theArlege Hotel. On September 24, 1888 he bought 26 and 1/3 acre s ofland from John R. and Nancy Smith. On December 27, 1892 he bought 122and 3/4 acres fro m Grayson and Ellen Arledge which was located on theNorth Fork of White Oak Creek. He als o became Mayor of Columbus from1881 through 1886. He served as Justice of the Peace for th e longestcontinuous term of any man in that state. After Elizabeth HannonHill s death, Noa h bought other property on White Oak Creek, East ofColumbus, North Carolina and approximatel y a city block of land inColumbus. He also purchased another house and lot across the stree tfrom the First Baptist Church of Columbus, North Carolina.
Elizabeth Hannon Hill is buried beside Noah in the Wolfe Creek BaptistCemetery, Landrum, Sou th Carolina. She was the daughter of WilliamHannon and Phebe Disharoon. Plebe s parents we re Waitmon Disharoonand (?). After Phebe married William, her parents left North Carolinaa nd moved to Habersham County, Georgia.
NOTE OF INTEREST: Noah s father-in-law, William Hannon Jr., survivedan Indian massacre in 1 776. William Hannon Sr. and older members ofthe family were killed during this massacre o n the South side of thePacolet River in North Carolina. Edwin, Winnie, and William Jr., ra ninto a cane break and hid until the Indians left the area. Thechildren then ran down th e river bank to Earle s Fort. Colonel JohnEarle raised the three of them. After William Jr . became grown, hebecame a Baptist Preacher and was the second pastor of the Wolf CreekBapt ist Church in Landrum, South Carolina. It is now the FirstBaptist Church of Landrum, Sout h Carolina.
Noah Hill s second wife Emily B. Suddith lived to be over 80 years ofage and is buried in Ta ylors, South Carolina cemetery along withNoah s oldest son and some of his grandchildren. W hen Noah died itstated in his will that as long as his second wife Emily lived, sheand hi s son, Walter, lived in his house, they were to share equallyin his assets. In the event sh e left that house, all his propertywas to be sold and divided among his children. In Apri l of 1917 whenWalter died, Emily left the property and went back to Taylors, SouthCarolin a where her relatives, the Suddeths, were living. Noah schildren then sold all of Noah s an d Walter s property and divided itamoung themselves. Emily s sister, Mary Elizabeth Suddet h wasmarried to Stanhope W. Hill but it was not generally known ........hergrave marker i n Brushy Creek Cemetary lists her as his second wife.
