The first Hills in SC was a Dr. George Washington Hills, w ho came to Edisto in the 1820's and married Elizabeth Becke tt Seabrook c. 1820. Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph B aynard Seabrook and Martha Blair Beckett. Elizabeth and he r parents at buried at Trinity, but no sign of George W. Hi lls' grave. George was the son (I'm still working on this , but this is my best bet so far) of Ebenezer Hills, Jr. o f Savannah, son of Ebenezer Sr. . Ebenezer Hills, Sr. had c ome to Savannah at the and of the Revolutionary War. He wa s a descendent of Joseph Hills, English Puritan that came t o MA in 1538. Ebenezer was a sea captain, fought in the Rho de Island Navy during the war. He had a ship named the "Lad y Washington" and ferried supplies and troops (maybe GW) du ring the early part of the war in the NE. This ship was sun k underneath him by the British, so he got another ship...A fter the war he came t:o Savannah and married a local girl , Esther Raspberry (father was a prosperous Savannah mercha nt), had a shipping firm and got into some lawsuits with Ch arleston merchants over some British prizes (captured by Fr ench privateers during the 1790's). He had two sons, one ke pt the books, Henry Hills, and Ebenezer, Jr. ran the ships , particularly one, the brig "William." Ebenezer Jr. got into some trouble with th e Coast Guard (the CG commander in Savannah was his brothe r in law, CDR Gale). George Hills ran the ship also durin g the 1809-1813 time frame, and then somehow he became a mi nister. I believe he came to Edisto as a guest preacher an d that's how he met Elizabeth, or the Seabrooks went to Sav annah...Anyway, there are Hills on the sea islands thanks t o these two.
