Many o f the new comers w ere fro m county Kent i n England (wit h a fair numb er from t he tow n of Tenterde n), and they be came known a s the "me n of Ke nt" or "K entish men."16 T hus, unlike s ome of the ot her ne w town s of the 1630s whi ch were settle d almost e ntirel y by no n-Plymouth people , Scituate was se ttled by so me wh o ha d previously live d in Plymouth town , and some wh o ha d n ot.
His English origins are shown by Elizabeth French, "Ge n e a l ogical Research in England: Hinckley," NEHGR 65:28 7 , 31 4 , 6 8:186). He was of Tenterden, Kent, and came t o N ew En gl an d in the Hercules in March 1634/35, accompa nie d by hi s w if e Sarah and four unnamed children. He li ve d in Scitu ate , bu t apparently did not become a membe r o f Lothrop' s chur ch, f or only his wife is shown as ha vin g joined, be ing rec orde d as "Goody Hinckley" on 30 A ugus t 1635. The y had a da ughte r Elizabeth baptized at S citua te 6 Septemb er 1635 (NE HGR 9: 281-82). Samuel becam e a fr eeman 2 Janua ry 1637/38 , and o n the same date h e was a t rial juror (PC R 1:74). O n 4 Decem ber 1638 he w as among s everal men of S cituate wh o were pres ented fo r receivin g strangers into t heir house s without lic ens e from the g overnment (PCR 1:10 6). On 4 Ju ne 1639 he w a s a grandjuro r (PCR 1:126). Sinc e his son Sam uel was b aptiz ed at Barn stable on 24 July 16 42 (NEHGR 9:28 2), i t would ap pear th at he accompanied Lot hrop in the mo v e there. On 5 Ju ne 1 644 he was a highway s urveyor fo r Barn stable (PCR 2:72 ) , a position he held man y times .
