JOSEPH ROBINETT. (BK 426) The year 1919 marks the seventieth anniversary of the residence of the Robinett family in Steuben County. As a family they have been distinctive not only for their long residence but by very unusual ability and other substantial qualities. They have been large land owners, have built up several extensive tracts from wilderness conditions and many of them are still tillers of the soil and recognized as splendid citizens of their community. The first generation to settle here were Samual (BK 413) and Julia (McDonald) (BK 414) Robinett. The former was born in 1802 and died May 3, 1893. The latter was born in 1800 and died September 9, 1888. When they came to Richland Township in 1849 they acquired 233 acres of land, and there lived the rest of their lives as farmers. Joseph Robinett was born on the old homestead of his father March 14, 1863, and as a boy attended the local public schools. In 1894 he bought his present farm of 110 acres in Richland Township. He still lives there and has done much to improve it with good buildings. He now rents out his land and is practically retired. In politics Mr. Robinett is a Democrat. January 1, 1887, he married Miss. Etta E. Brunner (BK 400) of Troy Township, DeKalb County. She died in 1901, the mother of three children. Ethel (BK 437) the older, was educated in the public schools and is the wife of Galon Campbell, and had five children, only two of whom (Mary Jeanette Campbell Looney & Hattie Irene Campbell Pratter) is living. The three deceased were named, Helen, Clifton Dale, and Joseph. Mary B. (BK 438), the second daughter of Mr. Robinett, is a graduate of the Edon High School in Ohio, and the teacher's training course at the Tri-State College, after which she taught school, and then attended business college at Fort Wayne, and during the period of the war has been a typewriter in Government offices at Washington. (From page 9 of the Gould Book) Etta's sister, Ada (Brunner) Munn (BK ?), died giving child birth, so Etta and Joe, took her little son (Jake Munn) to raise. In 1901, March 21, Etta died of complications from childbirth. Her little son preceded her in death, March 8. Joe was left with two little daughters and Jake. Jennie (Robinett) Kohl, his sister, came to stay with them for a while to help with the children and the house; (told to us by Erma (Robinett) Burch.) Joe then married Sarah Hattie Somerlot, of Angola, Indiana, January 8, 1903; to this union was born to them Sevilla in 1906. A big year for them! They also built the barn that year. (From page 12 again)In 1903 Mr. Robinett married Miss Sarah Somerlot (BK 440). They have a daughter, Sevilla Irene (BK 441), who graduated from the eight grade in 1919. Mr. Robinett has been a member of the Liberal United Brethren Church since he was twenty years of age and has been a trustee of the church for over ten years and was treasurer when the new church was built in Troy Township of DeKalb County. His first wife was a member of the same church and joined it when a little girl. Their daughter Mary was the youngest child ever formally admitted as member of the church, being only nine years old at the time. The present Mrs. Robinett is also a member of this church. (From page 9 and 10 of the Gould Book) In 1925, he and Sarah moved to Edon, Ohio, where he was a custodian at the school for a number of years. He rented the farm out to Aunt Ethel and Uncle Galon, they were there until the late 1920's. Then he rented the farm to Kenneth Noragon. And shortly after he sold the farm to Elson Buell. Kenneth remained on the farm for three to six months, then Elson moved there with part of his family, and left Edgar,(Mr. Pop Buell), with his new wife, Mattie Lorene, at the old Buell homestead. (When Forrest Buell married in the 40's he told his father, Elson, "You moved to let Edgar have the other house, now move and let me have this one!" This is how Forrest got Elson's house.) Sarah Hattie, died in Edon in 1930. In 1933, Joe married Melissa (nee: Shaffer) Allmong Hissong (She is Florence Eyster's mother's sister.) She was the only Grandma that most of Grandpa Joe's Grandchildren ever knew. Joe died in 1946. He is buried in the Edon Cemetery, beside his wives, Etta, Sarah and the baby. Melissa died in 1956, and is buried beside her first husband in Bethel Cemetery, she had five children by Charles Allmong.

He first united with Zion United Brethren Church and upon moving to Edon transferred his membership to the Edon Methodist Church. He was a lover of children and a custodian of the public high school for many years, had a fine opportunity to mingle with and show his interest in children, which he did to a remarkable extent. Funeral was from the Edon Methodist Church Wednesday, September 18, the pastor, Ray Bietson, speaking from the text chosen by Mr. Robinett himself, Philippians 1:23, "For I am in a straint betwixt two, having a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is far better."
