Michaelmas Q/S 021 p. 82-83. Edward was fined 1 pound + 12 shillings costs for poaching on the property of Francis Bailey at Stetchworth.

The 1851 Census showed Isaac and his wife (Mary Ann Mingay), living in Stetchworth. Isaac worked as an agricultural labourer. Also living with them was his married daughter Mary and son in law John Jaggard, also an agricultural labourer. They also had a grandson William aged 8 (born in 1843) living with them.

The 1871 Census shows Isaac (a widower) living in the Almshouse , Stetchworth village. His occupation is shown as agricultural labourer.

The 1851 census for Stetchworth, Newmarket, Cambridgeshire shows Robert and sons Edward (20), Isaac (16) and James (14) working as agricultural labourers. Elizabeth Norton Hobbs his daughter would have been 22 in 1851 and was not living with the family at the time of the Census.

1841 Quarter Sessions 18 p. 543. Trinity 1841 A conviction dated the 20th day of April 1841 before the Rev. John Calthrop Clerk (one of the Justices) whereby Caroline Benstead, Rebecca Stigwood, Phoebe Hobbs & Lydia Bailey all of Stetchworth in this County were convicted in the sum of 6 pence damages and 13 shilling & 6 pence costs for having on the 14 day of April then instant at a certain heath called the Links in the said parish of Stetchworth willfully damaged, injured or spoiled a quantity of furze then and there growing of the value of 6 pence, the personal property of John Lyles King of a private nature against the form of the Statute in such case made & provided.

Edward ran away from home after the death of his Mother & his Father's marriage to Grace Henderson. The records of his enlistment were destroyed in the Blitz of WW2. The first record is on February 29, 1880 for pay, allowances, and promotion to Lance Corporal in the Sterlingshire Regt. 75th of Foot. On March 11, 1881 the regiment moved from Chatham to Portsmouth and then on the S.S. Egypt to Malta. On March 20, the regiment was stationed in Floriana barracks Valetta, Malta. On July 1st the 75th and 92nd were joined to form the 1st & 2nd battalions of the Gordon Highlanders. August 2, 1882 embarked on the S.S. Euphrates for Alexandria, Egypt. August 19, 1882 battalion strength 690 all ranks, joined the Highland brigade at Ramleh; September 3, 1882 Arrived at Lake Timseh; September 9, disembarked at Ismailia; September 11, arrived at Kassassin; September 13, Battle of Tel-el-Kebir; September 16, surrender of Kafr-Dawar and collapse of Arabi Pasha's rebellion.; September 17, surrender of Tanteh garrison 3,000 infantry, 1 regiment of cavalry and 24 guns. Stationed in the Citadel, Cairo as part of the Army of Occupation. January 6, 1883 promoted Orderly Room Clerk. February 4, 1884 expedition to avenge the massacre of Baker Pasha's Egyptian troops by Osman Digna at El Teb. Feb 15, embarkation; arrived at Suakin on P&O liner Thibet continued on to Fort Baker at Trinkitat; Feb 29, 1884 battle of El Teb Tamai; March 1, surrender of Takar; March 3, burial of Baker's troops & return to Trinkitat; March 4, embarkation on HMS Utopia for Suakin; night march to Baker's zareba 8 miles from Suakin; March 12 night attack by Osman Digna; March 13, battle of Tamai - Osman Digna's camp & magazine destroyed; march to Handab 27th, campaign halted as Osman Digna's forces were considered to be broken. April 1, 1884 sailed from Suakin on H.M.S. Utopia; April 5, Landed at Suez, promoted Lance Sergeant & awarded the general campaign medal with clasps for Tel-El-Kebir, Suakin, El-Teb-Tamai and Khedive's Star. December 4, left Sarrasin in whaler boats; 20th arrived at Dal rapids; Jan 13, arrived at Korti; 26th Fall of Khartoum to the Mahdi's forces, murder of General Gordon. February 12, River column reached Kirbakan. troops ordered back to Cairo. June 29, Column reached Assiout and embarked for Cairo. Awarded clasp to General Service Medal Nile 1884-85. September 8, embarked for Malta. January 6, 1886 promoted to Colour Sergeant number changed to 1969. December 7, 1887 married Lydia Ida Ranze in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. Returned with his wife to Malta. November 14, embarked on H.M.S. Himalaya for Ceylon; arrived December 6, 1887. February 1 1888, military records show him as "prisoner" reason not given. Actual date of discharge unknown - records destroyed in WW2 bombing of London. March 29, 1894 Regimental History records that 186 officers & men returned to England. he worked variously as a Commercial Clerk and then a Provision Dealer's porter. After the death of his wife he lost touch with all his family. My father found him living in an Almshouse at 5, Frederick Mews, St. Pancras, Middlesex and supported him until his death in February 1933. He was recorded as being a horse carman at the time.

Lydia was born in Belgaum, India and returned with her father Lewis to Tuddenham, Cambs. in July 1856. She was baptized in Tuddenham, Cambs, August 10, 1862, while living with her aunt Mary Ann Grimwood (Ranns). Her daughter Bertha was illegitimate and the birth certificate shows Lydia as a domestic servant from Tuddenham, Cambs. The birth was registered in Mildenhall, Suffolk. Her son Edward Bruce also illegitimate was born (2:30 a.m. on December 5, 1882), in the Union Workhouse, Epsom, Surrey. On the birth certificate she was shown as a domestic servant. She was discharged from the Workhouse on March 23, 1883 when her age was recorded as 28. On December 7, 1887 she married Edward John Hobbs at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. Her address at the time is shown as 1 Crown Court, Southgate, St. Bury St. Edmunds and her age as 30. She accompanied her husband to Malta and then to Ceylon where she had a daughter Olive Flora Helen. Both Bertha & Bruce remained in England with the Grimwoods during this time. Bertha always thought that the Grimwoods were her grand parents. Upon her return from Ceylon, Bertha & Bruce joined the family, now living in Paddington, London. After her death in 1913, her son Francis Walter James (my father), went to live with his sister Bertha now married to Walter Wallis. He stayed with them until joining the army in WW1 in 1914.

Bertha's birth certificate does not show the name of her father. Cert # BXA 303223 In the Tuddenham parish register she was christened Bertha May Rans July 6, 1879 In 1889, Bertha was married and living at 84A Inglethorpe St. Fulham. On the death of her husband she moved to 97 Kenyon St. Fulham where she lived until her death.

Bruce spent his early childhood with his aunt, Mrs Grimshaw in Suffolk, until his mother's return from Ceylon. On August 15, 1899, at age 17 years 8 months Bruce enlisted at London in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, Reg. # CH 11074.He stated that he was a shop assistant at the time. He is described as 5' 8" tall with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and light brown hair. He had a snake & eagle tattooed on his left wrist. In 1901 he was on board HMS Albion, in 1902 in HMS Alacrity based in Kowloon China, in 1904 HMS Leviathon, in 1905 HMS Cressy, in 1905 HMS Wildfire, in 1909 HMS Bedford, in 1910 HMS Pembroke and in 1911 HMS Shannon. On March 24, 1911 he transferred to the Royal Navy as a probationary Ships Corporal, Reg. # M 2875, engaging for 12 years. At this time he had got two Good Conduct badges. He was promoted to Ship's Corporal May 13, 1912. He married Kate Bardell on September 13, 1913, St George's Church Hanover Square. He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal and the British War & Victory Medal (WW1). On December 31, 1918 he was promoted to Master-at Arms. He was invalided from the service on April 20, 1921. He became the manager of the United Services Club in Chatham until 1926. He then became the licensee of "The Six Bells" pub at Chatham until 1937, when he took up a position as caretaker of a bakery. In 1949 he and his wife together with their two married children emigrated to Salisbury, Rhodesia.

Thomas served in the Royal Army Service Corps in WW1, and met his brother Frank briefly in 1916. There was no real contact between the brothers after the war. My Mother, Ada Margaret tried to get in touch with him in 1957, but his wife said that he had died a few years previously.

Francis' (Frank's) mother died when he was fifteen. Since he was the only child left at home, his father decided to move into lodgings,and Frank went to live with his married sister Bertha, in 1913. He started work at age 11, working for a milk delivery company and then a painter. When he was 14 he got a job as a delivery boy with Daniel Neal's a large store near Oxford St. There he met Sybil Pearmine. He volunteered on August 14, 1914 for Army service Reg # 82756, as a signaller in the Royal Field Artillery, "D" battery, 64th Army brigade. Sybil decided to write to him and through this correspondence he met her sister Ada Margaret whom he later married. During WW1 he was in the following battles:1915:- 2nd battle of Ypres, Festubert, Ploegsteert & Armentieres. 1916: Ypres, Arras, the Somme, Ovilliers and Thiepval. 1917:- Messines, Ypres Offensive, Zillibeeke, Potisze, Frezenberg, Passchendaele. 1918:- German Offensive, Fleur-Baix to Striazeele. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in 1916, (Supplement to the London gazette, August 23, 1916), and was gassed in the first German gas attack in 1915 This later gave him a cough that lasted for the rest of his life. he was also awarded the British War medal, the Victory Medal and the 1914-15 Star. After demobilization on August 14, 1920, he joined the Metropolitan Police on August 16, 1920. Her married Ada Margaret Pearmine on June 9, 1923, living in Percy St. London. In 1925 they moved to 38, Seymour House, Tavistock Place W.C.1. By chance he discovered that his father was now living in the St. Pancras Almshouse and assumed responsibility for his upkeep, although his father refused to visit or have any contact with him or his family. He was not notified of his father's death and some of the upkeep money was refunded to him in February 1938, 5 years after his father had died! In 1935 they moved to 30, Jenner House, Hunter St. W.C.1. He was commended three times for bravery: Stopping a brewer's dray with runaway horses going down Pentonville Hill approaching a busy crossing at King's Cross; for disarming a meat porter who has gone berserk in Smithfield Meat market, and disarming a murderer armed with a gun. For some years was stationed at the King's Cross Road Station. He was a good organizer of social events and was also very musical with a good singing voice. In 1939 we were on holiday in Newton Abbott, Devon when he was recalled to London on August 24, 1939. War as declared on September 3, 1939. He volunteered for the Army again, but was refused because he was in the Met. Police. He was invalided from the Force in 1945 largely due to shock, when he was informed that his home has been hit by a V2 rocket and his son Clement, home from Army leave, was among the missing. He then worked as an accountant for UNRRA, the UN refugee Organization. In 1947 he was asked to join the IRO in Geneva, Switzerland. He and his wife lived on the Rue du Mole in Geneva until 1951, when he was asked to join UNKRRA in New York. He lived with his wife in New Rochelle, Westchester County and worked at the UN Building in New York City. In 1957 he returned to England, living in Surbiton, Surrey and working for the Egg Marketing Board as an accountant. He suffered a severe stroke on 25, October 1964 and was forced to retire. In October, 1965, he and his wife came to Canada to spend 6 months with their son Clem and his wife Sonia and their grand daughter Frances. Two weeks after his arrival he suffered a massive stroke on November 9, 1965 and died. He was cremated and his ashes interred in Pinecrest cemetery, Ottawa on November 15, 1965.
