John Hobbs had left home before the 1851 census. In 1857, he was living with his wife at Providence Cottage, Shortlands, Hammersmith and was employed as a Gentleman's coachman. He was shown in the 1861 census as a tobacconist and in the 1871 census as the postmaster of Hammersmith. His wife Sarah died in childbirth in 1865 and he remarried to Grace Henderson of Streatham. He has several children with Grace who is shown as a widow in the 1881 census.

Edward ran away from home after the death of his Mother & his Father's marriage to Grace Henderson. The records of his enlistment were destroyed in the Blitz of WW2. The first record is on February 29, 1880 for pay, allowances, and promotion to Lance Corporal in the Sterlingshire Regt. 75th of Foot. On March 11, 1881 the regiment moved from Chatham to Portsmouth and then on the S.S. Egypt to Malta. On March 20, the regiment was stationed in Floriana barracks Valetta, Malta. On July 1st the 75th and 92nd were joined to form the 1st & 2nd battalions of the Gordon Highlanders. August 2, 1882 embarked on the S.S. Euphrates for Alexandria, Egypt. August 19, 1882 battalion strength 690 all ranks, joined the Highland brigade at Ramleh; September 3, 1882 Arrived at Lake Timseh; September 9, disembarked at Ismailia; September 11, arrived at Kassassin; September 13, Battle of Tel-el-Kebir; September 16, surrender of Kafr-Dawar and collapse of Arabi Pasha's rebellion.; September 17, surrender of Tanteh garrison 3,000 infantry, 1 regiment of cavalry and 24 guns. Stationed in the Citadel, Cairo as part of the Army of Occupation. January 6, 1883 promoted Orderly Room Clerk. February 4, 1884 expedition to avenge the massacre of Baker Pasha's Egyptian troops by Osman Digna at El Teb. Returned with his wife to Malta. November 14, embarked on H.M.S. Himalaya for Ceylon; arrived December 6, 1887. February 1 1888, military records show him as "prisoner" reason not given. Actual date of discharge unknown - records destroyed in WW2 bombing of London. March 29, 1894 Regimental History records that 186 officers & men returned to England. he worked variously as a Commercial Clerk and then a Provision Dealer's porter. After the death of his wife he lost touch with all his family. My father found him living in an Almshouse at 5, Frederick Mews, St. Pancras, Middlesex and supported him until his death in February 1933. He was recorded as being a horse carman at the time.

1836 Quarter Sessions records, Cambridge CRO, Epiphany Q/S 17 pp 321-22. The King versus Hobbs. This day an indictment was preferred by Richard Eaton against John Hobbs late of the Parish of Stetchworth in this county, labourer for felony & larceny which said indictment was found by the Grand Jury to be a True Bill and the said John Hobbs being present here in Court and having heard the said indictment read, pleaded not guilty thereto and put himself upon the Country, but upon trial was convicted. Whereupon it is considered by the Court and ordered that the said John Hobbs be imprisoned in the House of Correction for this County for the space of three calendar months and that he be kept to hard labour during such imprisonment.
NOTE: John was lucky, the man after him, also charged with felony & larceny was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia

The 1871 Census shows John, a labourer, who never married, living with his brother Henry, both of whom are agricultural labourers. His mother Elizabeth (Matthews) age 81 described as a pauper was living with them together with two nephews James age 15 a tailor's porter and William age 6 a scholar.

The 1851 Census shows John Cooper Hobbs, wife Maria (Sparks), daughter Sarah aged 33 and son John Cooper junior age 25 living at High street Dullingham. The 1871 census shows John Cooper Hobbs, now a widower Living with his unmarried daughter Sarah now 52 and his son John Cooper age 45 also unmarried. In both Census returns John & his son are agricultural labourers
