In 1797 the Thorp family bought the estate & farms at Chippenham.  The Farm Books are in the Cambridgeshire Record Office for about 1800-1830. These show that Thomas was a ploughman using Boxer the stallion as a plough horse and paid 1 shilling & 6 pence per day.  In 1821 he was instructing "boy Hobbs" (his son James) on the plough.  James was paid 8 pence per day.

Quarter Sessions Easter 1817 Q/S 12 p. 457-458. A conviction dated the 13th day of February 1817 before the reverend Sir Henry Bate Dudley Bart,. LL.D. one of the Justices, whereby John Hobbs, servant to Edward Palmer of Soham in the County, farmer was convicted in the penalty of 10 shillings for riding upon a certain carriage called a wagon in a public highway in the Parish of Soham aforesaid, not having some person on foot or horseback to guide the same which said carriage was not then drawn by one horse only, nor by two horses abreast nor conducted by someone holding the reins.

Quarter Sessions Epiphany 1836 Q/S 017 pp. 321-322. John was sentenced to three months for larceny.

In 1821 James, referred to as "boy Hobbs",  was being instructed by his father Thomas on ploughing and was paid 8 pence per day on the farm of the Thorp family at Chippenham.

Thomas served in the Royal Army Service Corps in WW1, and met his brother Frank briefly in 1916.   There was no real contact between the brothers after the war.  My Mother, Ada Margaret tried to get in touch with him in 1957, but his wife said that he had died a few years previously.
