BIO: Compiler found Samuel MOW and his son, Adam, enumerated in the home of David MOW, Jr., in Richland Twp., Fulton County, IN on the 1850 census. Inquiries to Wilma Foltz and Margarett Steininger led to reports that David, Jr. was the son of Samuel and the half-brother of Adam. Adam's obituary states that he was born in Shelby County, IN, 06 OCT 1829. David, Jr. died in Fulton County in October 1869. David was 6 days more than 42 years of age making his birthdate in September 1827, by calculation. Discovery of this family on the WORLD FAMILY TREE CDs in 1997, brought data submitted by Nancy NORDQUIST, Shoreline, WA, stating that David was born 01 OCT 1825. Per Ms. NORQUIST, David was born in OHIO. The source of her data was not cited on the disk. Ms. NORDQUIST also gives David's date of death as "06 OCT 1869." Compiler found David, Jr.'s place of birth listed on both the 1850 and the 1860 census as "Ind." On the "More About David MOW" notes in Ms. NORDQUIST's entry compiler found the statement, "Event 1: August 11, 1862, 1st LT. Co. F-87, Civil War". David MOW, Jr. was a veteran of the Civil War, enrolling in August, 1862 at Rochester, IN, but being declared totally disabled Dec. 1862 because of hemorrhoids. He and his family maintained a large farm near Pendleton Bridge on the Tippecanoe River in Fulton County where he was an active and respected member of the community. The following copy of his obituary was supplied by Wilma FOLTZ.

*********************** "DEATH OF DAVID MOW, Esq. This community felt a severe shock last Sunday evening, upon the announcement of the death of David Mow, at his residence in Richland Township, at 4 p.m. of that day. Mr. Mow had been seen by many the day previous, as he was in Rochester during a portion of the afternoon and evening. He attended the installation of the officers of the Rochester Lodge of Odd Fellows, of which he was the D.D.G.M. He was complaining, and was so unwell as to be unable to officiate at the installation, but no one had grounds for apprehension of danger. He went home, after the lodge closed, in company with Benj. Wilson, Esq. and Mr. C.S. Hickman, with whom he parted as on other similar occasions. He was taken sick two or three hours after reaching home, and fell into a congestive chill, which proved fatal. David Mow was six days more than 42 years of age, and the better portion of his life had been spent in Fulton County. He was generally known throughout the county. His business was that of a farmer, and he was one among the very few of his class who appeared to appreciate the honorableness and diginity of his calling. Everything calculated to advance the agricultural interests of this region found in him a ready advocate. He was a thriving man, because he was not above his business, and withal industrious, energetic, liberal and honest. His farm has long been supplied with labor-saving machinery, and he has successfully solved many problems in agriculture. Mr. Mow was an uncompromising Radical, and his voice will be sadly missed in the councels of the party. He was not an aspirant for office , but his generous heart was filled with the love of mankind. He believed that all men are created equal, and endowed by the great Creator with an unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A sentiment so noble, when believed from the heart, softens the sperities of life, and exhibits itself in works of charity and benevolence. Mr. Mow entered the army in August, 1862, as a Lieutenant in the 87th Regiment. He resigned his commission January 1863, having contracted a very painful form of hemorrhoids. In due time after his return, he became the father of three healthy children, all girls, at one birth. He leaves a large family, who are believed, however, to be well provided for. His funeral was preached on Tuesday, in the M.E. Church, at 11 oclock, by Rev. Mr. Stringer. A large congregation listened to the discourse and followed the remains to their last resting place in the Odd Fellow's Cemetery. ....Masonic fraternity, of which Mr. Mow was a member... ************************* In 1867, a small item appeared in the "Rochester Standard' on Feb 21, concerning a report that David Mow had come very near being drowned four days earlier while helping remove lodged ice from the bridge across the Tippecanoe River near Rochester. Late in May, 1889, David Mow's younger children filed for pensions for his Civil War service under the "Minor Children's Pension Act of July 25, 1866". Documents included in the application file verify the date of his death as the 3rd of October A.D. 1869 and give the place of death as "his farm, Richland Twp., Fulton Co., IN" The same file provides the date of death of David's wife, Eleanor--"died on the 23rd day of December 1873, in Fulton County, IN." Also included are the names and birthdates of seven of the MOW children born between 1854 and 1866. Census records from 1850 and 1860 indicate there were at least three other children not on the application. The last few documents in the file give evidence that this pension was never granted and that the claim was abandoned by about 1891. An inquiry from Jacob ZEITERS, Silver Lakes, IN in 1906 requests status of the claim. There is no later documentation.

BIO: Nothing is known of Eleanor's parents or her early life. She was married in Fulton Co. and by the 1850 census had two sons. Data found in the 1860 census and the pension file documents the birth of nine children to this marriage. Three were triplets born in August of 1864, after her husband returned from the Union Army. At least one son, Adam, was born after the triplets. In Jan. 1871, announcement of an Administrator's Sale by Eleanor MOW, Sr. and Henry F. MOW, administrators of the estate of David MOW, Jr. was printed in the "Rochester Union Spy", a Fulton Co. paper. Per the pension file, Eleanor died in Dec. 1873, in Fulton Co.

Research done by Rosemary WILLIAMS in the Fulton Co. Death Records produced a record for Henry MOW, son of David, Jr. and Eleanor. That data states that Eleanor (mother) was born in ENGLAND. U.S. Census Records for 1850 and 1860 both give her place of birth as N.Y. Although the WFT data submitted gives Eleanor's place of birth as "ENGLAND", both the 1850 and the 1860 census for Fulton County, IN say that her place of birth was "New York".

BIO: Henry MOW was 2 years old on the 1850 census, but 13 years on the 1860 census. Death Records at the Board of Health in Fulton Co. give his birth date as 01 June; Ms. NORDQUIST records it as "05 June". (Her source unknown.) The first marriage given here (Fila Ann DAVIS) was assumed when compiler saw this marriage listed among Fulton County marriages. Then upon finding the WFT CD listing, Ms. NORDQUIST's data supported the assumption. The second marriage to Hannah BARNETT is proven by a deed recorded in March, 1884. Henry, Hannah, Henry's brother, Enoch, and William Shoup sold property to John Hissong. Ms. NORDQUIST cites two addtional marriages and seven children for Henry F. MOW.

An administrator's sale listed in a Fulton Co. paper on Jan 30, 1871 names Henry and his mother, Eleanor as executors of his father's estate.

BIO: Enoch was listed as one year of age on the 1850 census and 11 years on the 1860 census. There are two marriages listed for him in the Fulton Co. Marriage Indexes. In 1884, he signed with his brother, Henry F., his sister-in-law, Hannah and William Shoup on the sale of estate property in Richland Twp. to John Hissong. Rosemary Williams sent compiler a listing for the funeral of Enoch on 12 MAY 1921. It is assumed that he died in Fulton Co., but this is not documented. In May, 1889, seven of the children of David MOW, Jr. filed application for benefits under the Dependent Children's Pension Act of 1866 on their father's disability from his Civil War service. Enoch and his older brother, Henry F., were not included in the children of David Mow who applied for pension benefits in 1889. The oldest child to apply was Mary E. MOW BATCHELOR, who was born in 1854. Rosemary WILLIAMS found a death record for Enoch at the Fulton Co. Bd. of Health. The date of birth is as shown here; the date of death is given as 09 MAY 1921, but Enoch's wife is named as "Nora"! There is no marriage record for this. His mother was named Eleanor and would be the closest approximation to "Nora" in the MOW files. The same death record has a notation "brother to Henry" which lends even more evidence to this being the correct "Enoch MOW." March, 1997: Compiler examined 1920 census microfilm for Fulton County, IN. In Rochester Township, Household and Family #302, were "Enoch MOW, 70" and "Nora E. MOW, 45." The area used for "relationship to head of the household," was left blank. This may be simply an oversight on the enumeration. Still, "Nora" was listed as his wife on the death certificate. It would seem likely that Enoch married a third time between 1891 and 1920.

BIO: In March, 1884, Eleanor's brothers, Henry and Enoch, and her husband, William SHOUP, took part in the sale of land to John HISSONG in Richland Twp. On that document, Henry's wife, Hannah, also was a participant, but Eleanor apparently was not involved directly. In 1889, Eleanor and five of her brothers and sisters applied for pension benefits from their father's Civil War disability. On the application, she gives her exact date of birth. There is no mention of her first name on the file, but on the marriage index it appears as "Maude E. MOW." On the WFT CD, Ms. NORDQUIST records this child of David and Eleanor MOW as "Eleanor Medhurst".

BIO: On the 1860 census, Mary is listed as Mary C. Her age is given as "6". Other documents show her as Mary E. Mary E. BATCHELOR is the first of the six children who applied for pension benefits from their father's service in the Civil War. She gave her date of birth as Jan. 17, 1854. The original application was filed with the pension office in May, 1884. The claim was apparently abandoned before 1906. Nancy NORDQUIST, in the data submitted for the WFT disk, reports Mary's date of birth as 11 November 1853. Since the 1854 date was supposedly reported by Mary herself, in filing for her share of her father's pension, compiler has chosen to record that as the correct birthdate. Furthermore, the WFT CD gives Mary's husband as "William L. SMITH" rather than Frank BATCHELOR. No documentation or reference is cited for this marriage. On the other hand, compiler found Mary's last name given as "BATCHELOR" on the CW Pension file data, as well as a record of this marriage on the Fulton County, IN Marriage Index. SMITH may have been a later marriage for Mary E. MOW.

REF: 1. Obit: David Mow, Jr., Father, 1867 2. Civil War Pension File #396973, National Archives, Wash., D.C. 3. WORLD FAMILY TREE, Vol. 5, Tree #2055, Broderbund, submitted by Nancy NORDQUIST, 1550 NW 195th St, Apt. 110, Shoreline, WA 98117-2857.

BIO: Edith was one of the triplet girls born to David Mow, Jr. Edith and her siblings filed for "dependent childrens'" pension from his Civil War service, years after his death. Apparently the pension was never approved, and the application was finally dropped, but the file contains family data. At the time of application, she signed as "Edith R. Helsel".. Her residence was Argos, Marshall Co., Ind. The married name may be spelled wrong here; the writing on the form was very hard to decipher. Ms. NORDQUIST, in her data sent to WFT, states that Edith married Tobias HELSEL. No date or place of marriage is given. "WFT Est." time of marriage is shown as "1878-1910." In the "More About" comments concerning Edith (MOW) HELSEL, compiler found Comment 1: Was a triplet (fraternal) Comment 2: Had still born twins

General Notes for Child Adam Schuyler Mow

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Evidently Adam was the "spokesman" for his siblings in their attempt to obtain delayed dependent childrens' pension from their father's Civil War service. In the application, Adam gives his exact date of birth. This application was abandoned in 1906, so apparently was never approved. According to the data in "More About" comments on Adam, in the WFT data submitted for the CD by Ms. NORDQUIST, Adam's middle name was "Schuyler". His occupation was "Preacher" (Indianapolis, South Bend, Marion and Warren, IN).
