Rites for Mrs. Nora Spurgeon at Sac City Funeral services for Mrs. Nora Spurgeon, 68, of Lytton, were held last Thursday afternoon at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City with the Rev. Lenhard R. Middents, pastor of the Sac City Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in Cedar cemetery.

Mrs. Spurgeon, a former resident of the Lake City community, died at Loring Hospital in Sac City on Tuesday, May 7th.

Surviving are three sons and a daughter: Merle of Austin, Minnesota; Warren, Waterloo; George, United States Army and Ilene, Mrs. Russell McClung of Lytton; 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Gus Holm of Worthington, Minnesota, and Otto of Lake City; and five sisters: Mrs. Anna Smith of Brewster, Minnesota; Mrs. Ida Blair of Yetter; Mrs. Bertha Marlott and Mrs. Helen Swink, twins of Lytton; and Mrs. Olive Spurgeon, Waterloo.

(Taken from the Waterloo Courier, Friday, October 10, 1986, Page A6) Olive L. Spurgeon Cedar Falls -- Services for Olive L. Spurgeon, 86, of 1410 Hawthorne St., will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Spurgeon died Wednesday (Oct. 8) at Satori Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 4, 1900, in Lake City, daughter of George and Louisa Nelson Holm. she married Floyd Spurgeon on February 20, 1918, in Lake City. He died in 1949.

Survivors include two sons, Carl L. and Dorse L., both of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, a brother, Otto Holm of Lake City; and a sister Helen Swink of Sac City; she was preceded in death by three brothers, Gus, Ed and Carl; and four sisters, Anna, Ida, Bertha and Nora.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home and for an hour before services at the church Saturday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Laura Edith Holm, daughter of Melvin & Janette Buttrick Mosher, was born January 30, 1882, in Carroll County., Iowa. She was married to Willard Spurgeon, they had 1 daughter, Ivan (Amsden).

Following Mr. Spurgeon's death she married Gus Holm, they lived in Minnesota. Following Mr. Holm's death, she moved to Pharr, Texas to be with her daughter & family. She returned to Lytton in 1982 where she resided until her last illness.

Mrs. Holm is survived by a son-in-law, Everett Amsden of Pharr, Texas, 1 grandson Raymond Amsden of Sloan; 1 brother, Charles Mosher of Lake City, 1 sister, Mrs. Florence Casady of Ft. Dodge; a sister-in-law Grace Mosher; eight great grandchildren, step children & step great grandchildren, & many nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Willard Spurgeon & Gus Holm, 1 daughter, Ivan Amsden, 1 granddaughter, 4 brothers & 2 sisters.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Huffman Memorial Chapel with Rev. Lyle Lutz of Emmanuel-St. Johns Lutheran Church in Lytton officiating. Burial was in Cottonwood Cemetery.

(Taken from Lake City Graphic newspaper) Walter W. Spurgeon Walter W. Spurgeon was born of Eliza Jane Cox and John L. Spurgeon on May 29, 1887 in Glidden township, Carroll County, Iowa, and passed from this life at the home of his daughter on January 9, 1959.

He was laid to rest in Cedar Cemetery, Sac County, Iowa, on January 12, 1959.

He grew to manhood in Calhoun County where he spent all but the last ten years of his life. Twenty-seven years were spent farming on the same farm northwest of Lake City, Iowa.

On February 26, 1913, he was united in marriage with Nora Holm of Lake City, Iowa. To this union were born four children, Irene, Merle, Warren and George.

He leave to mourn his passing his wife Nora, daughter, Mrs. Russell McClung of Lytton, Iowa; and sons Merle of Austin, Minnesota; Warred of Waterloo, Iowa and George where is with the United States Army and stationed at Schloss Germany. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild as well as a great many other relatives and friends.

Rites for Mrs. Nora Spurgeon at Sac City Funeral services for Mrs. Nora Spurgeon, 68, of Lytton, were held last Thursday afternoon at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City with the Rev. Lenhard R. Middents, pastor of the Sac City Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in Cedar cemetery.

Mrs. Spurgeon, a former resident of the Lake City community, died at Loring Hospital in Sac City on Tuesday, May 7th.

Surviving are three sons and a daughter: Merle of Austin, Minnesota; Warren, Waterloo; George, United States Army and Ilene, Mrs. Russell McClung of Lytton; 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Gus Holm of Worthington, Minnesota, and Otto of Lake City; and five sisters: Mrs. Anna Smith of Brewster, Minnesota; Mrs. Ida Blair of Yetter; Mrs. Bertha Marlott and Mrs. Helen Swink, twins of Lytton; and Mrs. Olive Spurgeon, Waterloo.

(Taken from the Waterloo Daily Courier, Thursday, May 5, 1949, page 2.) Floyd Spurgeon Funeral services were being planned Thursday at Parrott & Wood funeral home for Floyd Spurgeon, 51, of Sherwood Park, who died at 4:30 p.m. at home, Wednesday of carcinoma. He had been ill since last November.

He was born July 9, 1897, at Lake City, Iowa, the son of John and Eliza Spurgeon. A lifelong resident of Lake City he married Olive Holm there, February 20, 1918. Six years ago he moved to Waterloo and became an employee of the John Deere Wateerloo Tractor works.

A member of the Falls Avenue Wesleyan Methodist church, he is survived by his wife; two sons, Carl and Dorse, Sherwood Park, three brothers, Arthur, Brownsdale, Minnesota, Water, Rose Creek, Minnesota and Willard, Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

(Taken from the Waterloo Courier, Friday, October 10, 1986, Page A6) Olive L. Spurgeon Cedar Falls -- Services for Olive L. Spurgeon, 86, of 1410 Hawthorne St., will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Spurgeon died Wednesday (Oct. 8) at Satori Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 4, 1900, in Lake City, daughter of George and Louisa Nelson Holm. she married Floyd Spurgeon on February 20, 1918, in Lake City. He died in 1949.

Survivors include two sons, Carl L. and Dorse L., both of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, a brother, Otto Holm of Lake City; and a sister Helen Swink of Sac City; she was preceded in death by three brothers, Gus, Ed and Carl; and four sisters, Anna, Ida, Bertha and Nora.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home and for an hour before services at the church Saturday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Spurgeon, 70, of 1809 Maplewood Drive, died Sunday, February 7, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, from complications of a stroke; services 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waterloo; visitation 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Richardson Funeral Home, 266-3525, with the family present from 3 to 9 p.m.; there will be a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary, followed by a 7:45 p.m. Scripture Service Tuesday at the funeral home; a memorial fund will be established.

Survivors include his wife, 3 sons, Mark S. of Kansas City, Missouri; Neal J. of Des Moines & Paul M. of Hastings, Minnesota; 2 daughters, Marietta A. Spurgeon of Lakeland, FL & Karen L. Mackey of Cedar Falls; 3 granddaughters; and a brother, Carl of Cedar Falls; he was preceded in death by a son, Wane.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waterloo. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 3 to 9 p.m. There will be a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7:45 Scripture service.
