According to an interview conducted with Bessie Oleta Early (Gunn) in 2002, Henry T. Johnston served in the Civil War. He joined late and did not serve long. In the same interview, his granddaughter Bessie stated that he had three wives. The first being Mary Jane Honeycutt, the second wife's name she couldn't remember, and the third wife, Sarah Matile Jones, from Atlanta, GA. After the death of his second wife, being left with young children, Henry T. Johnston advertised for a governess. Miss Jones, a graduate of a college in Griffin, GA, responded, came to NC, and shortly thereafter became the wife of Henry T. Johnston. Henry Johnston was a farmer and his third wife, Sarah, ran a small store for him. Bessie remembers her well and remembers what a lovely person she was. Bessie, as a child, was fascinated with an old steamer trunk Sarah had and loved to plunder through it. An especially favorite item was a black parasol which Sarah had acquired in California. The parasol was given to Bessie. Just recently (2002), the parasol was given to Bessie's niece, Brenda.
General Notes (Wife)
She was buried in Concord, NC, rather than at New Salem Church in Statesville with the rest of family members, because she died of the measles during a measles epidemic. The train would not accept her body for transport because of contagion.

In an interview with daughter Bessie Oleta Early (Gunn) in 2002, she stated that her mother was a great mimic. Aside from mimicking the voices of various people, she could also trick people with her imitations of animal sounds. Bessie stated that her mother had quite a sense of humor. Bessie said her mother was often sick and had severe muscular aches and pains. Her mother blamed most of this on a case of malaria she had contracted as a child. In her declining years, Mattie lived with Bessie and her husband Knox Gunn. She was blind, but evidently her sense of humor and love of music never left her, for often when asked how she was, she replied with a rendition of the old hymn, "It is Well With My Soul".
