*16. HOWARD; Mercy, wife of W. Howard, Died Apr. 16 , 1 8 6 4 , Aged 87 Yrs. "Perhaps the oldest person to be b uri e d i n t his cemetary was Mrs. MercyHoward, who died i n 18 6 4 age d 8 7 years. At the close of the late war wit h Engl an d, th e inh abitants ofBelfast Maine, welcomed th eir sol die rs hom e wit h a triumphly reception. Mrs. How ard wa s in t he conc orse t o welcomeher husband, Willar d Howard , and he r broth er, Joh n Toothaker, a slender , tall yout h fiftee n years ol d andtha t her little son E lsol might b e able t o see his f ather an d uncle, she li fted him on t o her sho lder, that h e might se eover the h eads of the cr owd. The l ittle boy, El asol, lie s near hi s mother but di ed four yea rs previous t o his mothe r, i n 1860 aged 50 yea rs.... "Th e husband (of Me rcy Toothak e r Howard), who ha d preceded t he calling ofhi s wife an d fami ly in 1840, w as seized wit h the flux and c ame ne ar dying , but partial ly recoveringh e started to go b ac k to Ohio, bu t at For t Madison visite d for a few days w i th his neice, a nd goi ng into the garde nplucked a cucum be r which he pared a n d ate out of hand , which brough t on th e flux and he di e d and was buried at Fort Madison . "Notwith standing Mrs . Howa rd's great age, s he never l ost a tooth n or hadth e toothache , yet her maide n name w as, as we hav e seen, T oothaker; he r teeth were a ll doub le."
