Daniel Huger was a merchant in Loudun, which is about 45 m iles southwest of Tours. Around 1680, there was a very acti ve regiment of dragoons in the area, compelling many Huguen ots to recant. Daniel and his wife fled to La Rochelle, th e to the Isle of Re. The Isle of Re lies just off the Frenc h coast, near La Rochelle. The island is about 16 miles lon g and 3 miles wide. It became a refuge for Huguenots, but t he Huger family eventually fled to London, then Charleston , where their twelfth child was baptised 16 March, 1688.

HUGER, Francis Kinloch (Nephew of Isaac Huger, of Danie l Huger, and of John Huger, 1744-1804; first cousin of Dani el Elliott Huger, of Alfred Huger and John Huger, 1786-1853 ; half-brother of Benjamin Huger). Senator from Parish of A ll Saints.
Born September 17, 1773, in CharIeston, the son of Ma jor Benjamin Huger and Mary Esther (Polly) Kinloch. At 8, sent to England fo r education;studied medicine at Edinburgh University, 1790- 1792; in London under Dr. John Hunter; in 1794, for a shor t time on medical staff of British Army in Flanders. Bega n Continental tour; in Vienna learned that LaFayette, a fri end of his fathers was imprisoned at Ulmutz; with another d octor, attempted his liberation; plot temporarily successfu l, but Lafayette retaken on Austrian frontier and Huger an d his friend captured and imprisoned for eight months. Afte r his liberation, returned to America and completed medica l education at University of Pennsylvania, M.D., May 15, 17 97. U.S. Army captain June 1, 1798, to September 24, 1801 . Married Harriott Lucas Pinckney, sister of Senator Thoma s Pinckney, January 14, 1802. Physician in Charleston; ha d summer home near Stateburg and plantation on Santee River ; owned "Alderbury" plantation. During War of 1812, lieuten ant colonel of Second Artillery March 1813; colonel and adj utant general on staff of General Thomas Pinckney, April 6 , 1813 to June, 1815; transferred to corps of artillery Ma y 12, 1814; discharged June 15, 1815. S.C. Senate, All Sain ts', 1816-18. Member of Georgetown Library Society. Remove d to Pendleton in 1826. S. C. House of Representatives, Pen dleton, 1830-32. Member of Pendleton Farmers' Society. Towa rd close of life, returned to Charleston. Trustee, South Ca rolina College, 1817-21. Vestryman of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Pendleton, 1827. General Notes for Child Benjamin Huger General
Benjamin Huger was born in Charleston, South Carolina , on November 22, 1805. He graduated from the U.S. Militar y Academy at West Point in 1825, standing 8th in a class o f 37. He was then commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of artille ry. For three years he served in the topographical servic e and by 1832 was Captain of ordnance. For the next few yea rs, Huger was put in command, respectively, of the arsenal s in Harper's Ferry, Pikesville, and finally in his hometow n, Charleston. In 1840 he was sent abroad by the army to st udy European methods of warfare. He became an expert in ord nance and was appointed to the ordnance board of the War De partment. When the Mexican War broke out, he headed the ord nance bureau under General Winfield Scott. His military act ion at Vera Cruz and at Chapultepec earned him promotion fr om Major to Colonel. When Fort Sumter fell, Colonel Huger r esigned from the War Department and returned to Charleston . He was given command of the Department of Norfolk on Ma y 23, 1861 and became Brig. General C.S.A. on June 17, 186 1. He was named Maj. General on October 7, 1861. In the ope ning phases of the first Peninsular campaign he evacuated N orfolk (May 9, 1862) and withdrew to join the army defendin g Richmond. When the Peninsular campaign was in full swing , Huger was given the command of a division in General John ston's army. He led a division at the Battle of Seven Pines , Gaines's Mill, Glendale, and at Malvern Hill. General Jam es Longstreet criticized him severely for his dilatory move ments at Seven Pines. He was subsequently investigated by t he C.S.A. Congress and held responsible for the loss of Roa noke Island (February 8, 1862). On July 12, 1862, he was re lieved of his command and transferred to the West where h e was given an inspectorship in ordnance and artillery. Bef ore the war was over he was sent to the Trans-Mississippi A rmy, where he fought on until the surrender of the Confeder ate forces at Appomattox. After the war he was a farmer i n Virginia and North Carolina. Huger died on December 7, 18 77in Charleston, South Carolina.
