General Notes for Child Francis Huger Rutledge Right Reverend
RUTLEDGE, Francis Huger, first bishop of Florida and 53r d in succession in the American episcopate, was born in Cha rleston, S.C., April 11, 1799; son of Hugh Rutledge, and gr andson of Dr. John Rutledge. He was graduated from Yale col lege, A.B., in 1820, and entered the General Theological se minary, New York city, class of 1823, but did not graduate . He was ordered deacon in 1823; advanced to the priesthood , Nov. 20, 1825; was rector of a church on Sullivan's Islan d, S.C., 1827–39; of Trinity church, St. Augustine, Fla., 1 839–45; and of St. John's, Tallahassee, Fla., 1845–51. He w as elected bishop of the newly-created diocese of Florida , and was consecrated Oct. 15, 1851, by Bishops Gadsden, El liott, and Cobbs. The honorary degree of M.A. was conferre d on him by the College of South Carolina, and that of S.T. D. by Hobart college. 1844. He died in Tallahassee, Fla., N ov. 6, 1866.

General Notes (Husband)
Of the seven sons, the two youngest, Edward and Arthur, we re the best known. They both served in the Mexican War, Edw ard as Major of one of the ten regiments of regulars raise d for the reinforcement of Scott's army after the city of M exico had fallen, and Arthur as first lieutenant in the Cha rleston company of the South Carolina regiment of volunteer s, known as the Palmetto Regiment. . . .
In the Civil War, Arthur first raised a regiment of inf antry which he commanded with his headquarters at Georgetow n, S.C., of which he also commanded the military district . In the spring of 1862 he was ordered to Bragg's army afte r the battle of Shiloh, and served altogether in it, whic h included its being commanded by Joe Johnston and Hood. H e was twice wounded, the second time seriously at Franklin , Tennessee, in December 1864, and was in every battle in w hich the Western army was engaged until his second wound. H e was promoted to Brigadier General early in 1864. In 188 0 he was elected Adjutant General of South Carolina, and wa s twice re-elected, making a service of six years.
