After serving in the Navy during World War I, he returned to Alabama and went to work in a mine. He was assigned to work under a very hardened and vicious straw boss. The straw boss had everyone terrified of him. He had the practice of cutting men with his knife if they didn't jump to do exactly what he said instantly. Mr. RAGSDALE saw this happen to others several times and vowed that he would not let it happen to him. He started packing a gun to work. One day, he was working high on a scaffolding. The straw boss was behind him and ordered him to do something that he thought was far too dangerous. He refused to do it, and the straw boss slashed him repeatedly back and forth across his back with his knife. He turned around pulled out his gun and shot the straw boss dead on the spot. He was immediately arrested and thrown into jail. There was discussion about a murder trial. But, the Ragsdales had a good deal of influence and were friends with the governor of Alabama. He was let out of jail and told that he would not be charged, provided he left Alabama. That was when he moved to Colorado where he drove a mule team for the road crew building the road that goes over Monarch Pass in Colorado and eventually met and married. He did not return to Alabama to visit until about 16 years after the shooting. (Source: Alicia DEATS)
