He served as colonel of a militia regiment during thelatewar. He died September 3, 1887, at his home in Banks county, Ga.,whither he removed January 5, 1871. He was the son of Daniel MasonofRockingham county, Va.,who came to South Carolina in the early partofthe present century. He was a farmer and machinist by occupation.Hisfather, Richard Mason emigrated from Great Britain to thiscountrysome time in the decade of 1760, locating in Rockingham county,Va.Col. Robert E. Shewas the daughter of Benjamin Marett, the son of BenjaminMarett, whocame to South Carolina from Hillsboro, NC. C. Upon thematernal side,Col. Mason is descended from the French. His mother isstill living. He was reared on a farm in Oconee county, and with theexception ofthree years, that county has been his home all his life.He received agood common school education. In September, 1864, in thelatter partof his sixteenth year, he entered the service of theConfederate armyas a member at first, of the state cavalry for sixmonths, laterentering the infantry service in Company K, Seventh SouthCarolinaregiment, where he served until the close of the war, surrenderingwith Gen.
